다문화교육을 위한 유아교육기관장의 역할 : 미국 하늘어린이집 사례

A Director s roles for Multicultural Education : Case of Haneul Child Care and Education Programs in USA

본 연구는 유아다문화교육을 위한 기관장의 역할을 미국의 사례를 통해 탐색하고 이를 통해 국내 유아다문화교육에의 시사점을 얻기 위한 것이었다. 본 연구에 참여한 기관은 하늘어린이집으로 지역 대학의 대학원생들과 교직원 자녀들이 주로 재원하고 있으며 지역에서 가장 많은 다국적 유아들이 다니고 있어 설립당시부터 다문화교육을 실천해오고 있는 기관이었다. 본 연구자는 연구목적에 대한 원장의 동의와 참여관찰을 위한 지역교육청의 허가를 받은 뒤 하늘어린이집을 4개월 동안 참여관찰하고 원장과 교사와의 면담을 실시하였다. 그 결과 원장의 역할은 첫째, 다문화로 인한 도전들을 기관의 철학과 연결하기 둘째, 교사들의 수업을 지원하고 문제해결력 증진하기 셋째, 가족과 지역사회를 위해 존재함을 인식하기 넷째, 기관을 효율적으로 운영관리하기 위해 결정하기로 나타났다. 본 연구는 지금까지 국내 유아다문화교육이 교사 개인의 실천에만 집중되어온 것을 기관 차원으로 확대시켜 살펴봄으로써 다문화교육실천을 위한 기관장의 역할을 도출하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 이에 본 연구결과를 바탕으로 국내 유아다문화교육에서 요구되는 기관장의 역할과 다문화 리더십에 대해 논의하였으며 나아가 국내 다문화교육이 학교문화의 역량강화로 재개념화될 필요성을 제언하였다.

This study was to get implications for Korean multicultural education through a case of Haneul child care and education programs in USA. The study focused on director s roles for multicultural education practices. For the purpose, I observed one classroom of Haneul child care and education programs for 4 months and had an interview with a director and two teachers. The finding was as follows: First, connect multicultural challenges with philosophy of the institution. Second, support classroom management and problem-solving capability of teachers. Third, realize their work is for families and communities. Forth, make decisions for effective institution management. This study further extended that early childhood multicultural education have focused on personal efforts into perspective of institution. And it showed the things which a director can support for effective practice. I discussed about multicultural leadership of directors and empowerment of school culture for multicultural education.
