공동체와 커뮤니티 박물관 사회적 : 역할과 조건에 대한 탐색적 연구

Community and Community Museums: An Exploratory Study on the Social Roles and Conditions of Community Museums

1980년대 이후 박물관 이론과 실천적 차원에서 커뮤니티는 주요 화두가 되었다. 박물관이 지역의 고유한 문화와 공동체 의식의 회복을 위해 어떠한 사회적 역할을 수행할 것인가의 문제로부터 시작된 박물관과 커뮤니티와의 관계는 ‘커뮤니티 박물관’이란 새로운 형태의 박물관이 등장하는 흐름으로 이어졌다. 국내에서도 최근 서울시의 마을박물관 구상과 같이, 지역 정책 차원에서 커뮤니티 박물관을 건립하려는 논의가 시작되고 있다. 그러나 아직 커뮤니티 박물관의 개념과 역할에 대한 이해는 미흡한 상황이다. 이러한 배경에서 본 연구는 커뮤니티 박물관의 개념이 ‘커뮤니티’라는 개념과 ‘박물관’의 개념 사이에서 형성하는 담론과 이슈를 살펴보고, 커뮤니티 박물관의 실제 운영 사례를 분석하여, 커뮤니티 박물관의 개념과 조건을 탐색적으로 제시해보고자 하였다. 미국의 애나코스티아 커뮤니티 박물관(Anacostia Community Museum)과 인도네시아 니아스 헤리티지 박물관(Nias Heritage Museum)의 사례는 커뮤니티 박물관이 커뮤니티와 박물관의 연결이 아닌 융합을 통한 새로운 박물관의 모습이라는 것을 보여준다. 이를 통해 커뮤니티 박물관의 특수한 역할과 조건을 살펴보면, 첫째, 지역성의 적극적 반영, 둘째, 박물관 활동 전반에 걸친 주민의 참여, 셋째, 주요 공동체의 특수성과 문제를 드러내고 긍정적 정체성 형성을 돕기 위한 활동의 여부, 넷째, 사회와의 관련성을 전제로 한 공적 활동의 수행, 마지막으로 박물관으로서의 기능을 통한 역할 수행을 들 수 있다. 커뮤니티 박물관 고유의 사회적 역할과 조건에 대한 검토는 한국적 특수성을 반영한 커뮤니티 박물관의 진흥과 적절한 정책적 지원의 방향을 제시하는데 전제가 될 뿐 아니라 지역사회와의 연계가 주요 과제가 되고 있는 오늘날의 모든 박물관들에게 의미있는 시사점을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

The concept of community has been issued in theories and practical ways in the museum world since the 1980s. The issues of the relationship between community and museums have been started from the inquiry into the social roles of museums in forming and restoring community and its identity. Recently, the proper way of government support to facilitate community museums such as the supporting plan for promoting neighborhood(community) museums has been discussed in the cultural policy of Seoul. However, the concept and the roles of community museums have not been thoroughly explored in the academic field of museums. In this aspect, this research is intended to examine the theoretical concept of ‘community’ and ‘community museum’and analyze the practices of two community museums. Based on the theoretical and empirical study of community museums, this study identifies the concepts and conditions of community museums in an exploratory perspective. The case studies of the Anacostia Community Museum in the United States and Nias Heritage Museum in Indonesia demonstrate that a community museum is a new form of museum established through convergence rather than simple connection of a community and a museum. Based on the analysis of two museums, the unique roles and conditions of the community museum are summarized as follows: first, active reflection of geographical region, second, participation of community members in the overall activities of the museum, third, formation and development of the community identity, fourth, implementation of public activities based on the social relevancy, and finally, performance of intrinsic functions of a museum. The exploration of the roles and conditions of community museums could provide implications for further academic and practical discussions on community museums in Korea.
