  • 23

The purpose of this study is basically designed to explore the role and influence of the Psalms upon Martin Luther. What role did the Psalms play for Martin Luther in his conversion and pathway to reform? What the contributions did the Psalms have on his theology? And finally, what great impact did the Psalms have in his life and ministry? Those interested in Luther’s works on Psalms, these are the kinds of questions that wish toh ear the answers. As a consequence, this study first briefly sketched Luther’s life and first series of lectures on the Psalms at the University of Wittenberg. His conversion with Psalms during the Tower Experience and his core establishments to the doctrine with Psalms were then drawn from the study. In the last step, the study served to contribute to present how Luther applied the Psalms in his ministry, his crisis, and his life so that the reader can be attached to Luther’s great work on the Psalms. In doing so, the study found out that the Book of Psalms amplified his true conversion during the Tower Experience. And also for Luther the Psalms were the starting point of all theological study and his theology continued to develop through his exegetical works on the other Scriptures. Perhaps most important of all was the fact that the Psalms were a source of inspiration for his hymns, piety, and prayer. They consoled his life. For Luther, the Psalms served as his best friend and support, a spiritual teacher and mentor.
