숀 탠의 ｢도착｣에 나타난 다문화 인식 양상과 교육적 함의

The implications for multicultural education by analyzing Shaun Tan s The Arrival

본 연구는 숀 탠의 「도착」에 나타난 다문화 인식 양상을 분석하고 이를 통해 교육에 대한 시사점을 얻고자 수행되었다. 글 없는 그림책인 연구대상의 특징을 고려하여 시각 디자인 문법 , 디자인 수사학을 기초로 그림의 내용을 분석하였다. 그 결과 「도착」에는 1940년대 후반부터 1970년대 중반까지 시행되었던 동화정책, 1970년대 중반부터 2006년까지 시행되었던 다문화주의, 그리고 최근의 평등주의까지 호주의 다문화교육의 역사와 배려, 정체성, 열림, 소통에 기초한 작가 개인의 다문화주의가 담겨 있었다. 또한 새로운 문화에서 필요한 기본 생활 능력(언어, 문화 이해)의 필요성에 대한 내용, 새로운 문화에 대한 충격, 새로운 문화를 이해하는 과정, 새로운 문화의 정체성을 수용하는 태도 등의 다문화 교육 내용을 「도착」에서 찾을 수 있었다. 이러한 내용은 다문화 교육에서 소수자를 이해하는 교육내용과 방법에 대한 교육적 함의를 가진다.

The purpose of this paper is to draw out the important implications for multicultural education by analyzing Australian multicultural education revealed in Shaun Tan s The Arrival. To achieve this, the wordless picture book has been examined on the basis of the Grammar of Visual Design and design rhetoric. As a result, we can understand the wordless picture book reflects the social assimilation policy from the late 1940s to the mid-1970s. The book conveys the impact of the new culture and embrace of the new culture through its characters, background, events, and visual images. The aforementioned features of the book create the values of the multicultural education in The arrival.
