오늘날 유행하는 다원론적 미학은 아서 단토가 표방한 ‘미술의 종말’이라는 주장에 기인해 등장하였다. ‘미술의 종말’이란 문자 그대로 미술이 사라져 버린다는 것을 뜻하는 말이 아니라, 어떤 하나의 미술 양식이 주류를 이루던 시대가 끝났음을 뜻하는 말이다. 미술은 거의 모든 제한으로부터 벗어나 더욱 다양하게 만들어지고 있으며 앞으로도 그럴 것이다. 미술가가 어떤 양식을 선택하느냐 하는 것은 이제 취향의 문제가 되었다. 그리고 이는 작품 감상에 있어서도 마찬가지다. 감상자는 자기가 원하는 감상 방식을 선택할 뿐이며, 그 어떤 감상 방식도 다른 방식보다 우월하다고 말할 수는 없다. 감상 방식의 선택 역시 다양한 개인의 취향에 의존하게 된 것이다. 이와 같은 다원론적 미학 시대에는 미술교육 또한 다양한 양식의 창작을 도모하는 방향으로 이루어질 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 먼저는 고전적 양식, 낭만적 양식, 추상적 양식 등의 대표적 미술 양식들을 중심으로 교육하고, 각 양식에 걸 맞는 미학적 논의, 즉 모방론, 표현론, 형식론 등을 알기 쉽게 설명해줘야 할 것이다. 그 후 다양한 대상을 각기 다른 양식들을 통해 자유롭게 창작할 수 있도록 돕는 것이 바람직하다. 또 감상에 있어서도 다양한 감상 방식을 택할 수 있게끔 해주는 교육이 요청된다. 나아가 개개인의 감상을 시, 노래, 무용 등 다양한 표현 매체를 활용하여 표현할 수 있도록 하는 것은 종합적 감성 훈련에 도움이 될 것이다. 다원론적 미학에는 어떤 특별한 목적도 정처도 없다. 그리고 다원론 시대의 예술은 비록 비현실적일지라도 탈 목적적이고 탈 역사적인 유토피아적 이상을 꿈꾸고 있다. 미술교육이 그 꿈의 일부를 담당할 수 있다면 보람 있을 것이다.
This paper aims to search how the pluralistic aesthetics can be applied in the fields of the art education. The advent of the pluralism was brought about by the claim of ‘the end of art’ by Arthur Danto. The end of art does not literally mean that the art is no longer created, but that the age when a certain artistic style dominates has come to an end. Art works are created more variously, seemingly free from all strong restriction. The artist s choice of style is now a matter of his/her taste. It is the same with the appreciation of art works. The appreciator simply chooses the way of appreciation which he/she prefers, and no single appreciation is superior to others. The choice of means of appreciation is also the matter of his/her taste. Art education in the age of pluralism also needs to help create various artistic styles. For this purpose, firstly we should teach the major artistic styles such as Classical style, Romantic style and Abstract style, and explain the aesthetic arguments like mimetic theory, expression theory and formal theory which are related to each styles. And then we could help create various things in free styles. Also, for the appreciation, one should be taught to choose various ways of appreciation freely. And it will be helpful to express the personal emotion with diverse media such as poem, song and dance. Pluralism does not have any particular aim or destination. And art in the age of pluralism dreams of post-purposeful, post-historical utopia even though it may be unrealistic. And it would be worthwhile if art education plays a role in that dream.
