본 논문은 예술에 대한 인지적 접근의 대표적인 이론으로 넬슨 굿맨의 인지적 접근과 루돌프 아른하임의 시각적 사고에 의한 접근에 대해 구체적으로 살펴보고 이 두 이론이 제시하는 예술 교육적 의미를 분석해 보았다. 우선 그동안 예술에 대한 심리학적 연구가 등한시되었던 몇 가지 이유를 살펴보았다. 넬슨 굿맨의 예술에 대한 인지적 접근은 예술이 과학과 같이 우리의 주변 세계를 이해하고 구성하는 하나의 방식이라는 가정에서 출발한다. 따라서 예술교육은 예술적 상징을 조작하고 분석하는 능동적 과정에 관련된 인지적 능력들을 밝히고, 이 인지능력의 작용의 본질을 탐구하여 이 능력들이 어떻게 개발되고 교육될 수 있는지 그 이해의 근거를 획득하고자 시도하였다. 루돌프 아른하임의 시각적 사고 역시 예술은 우리의 주변세계를 이해하고 우리를 둘러싸고 있는 혼란스러운 경험에 대처하도록 하는 매우 중요한 인식적 기능을 수행하고, 예술을 창조하고 감상하는 예술적 행위는 인식적 행위로서 시각적으로 사고하는 것이라고 가정한다. 이와 같은 가정 하에서 아른하임은 예술의 인지심리학적 기초를 제공하는 시각적 사고의 특징을 분석하고, 예술적 과정에 어떤 처리과정이 관련되어 있는지를 밝혀내어 예술교육에 중요한 이론적 기초를 제공하고 있다. 마지막으로 이 두 이론이 제시하는 예술에 대한 교육적 관점을 살펴보았다.
This paper has a concrete review on Nelson Goodman s cognitive approach and Rudolf Arnheim s approach through visual thinking as representative cognitive approach to art, and also analyzes the meaning of the both theories in artistic education. Above all, it observes the reason why psychological study on art has been ignored up to now. Nelson Goodman s belief in cognitive nature of art starts from the hypothesis that art, just like science, is a way to understand and constitute the surroundings. Therefore, artistic education tried to reveal cognitive abilities related to active process handling and analyzing artistic symbols and achieve the basis of understanding on how to develop and educate the cognitive abilities by studying the essence of such abilities. Rudolf Arnheim s visual thinking believes that art understands the surroundings and performs substantially important functions to cope with confusing experience around us, and suppose that artistic behavior to create and appreciate art is a visual thinking as cognitive behavior. Under such hypothesis, Rudolf Arnheim analyzes the characteristics of visual thinking to provide cognitive psychological basis and reveals handling course related to the artistic process, in order to provide important theoretical basis for the artistic education. Lastly, it analyzes the educational point of view on art, suggested by the both theories.
