철학의 관점으로 본 시대별 동물윤리와 태도변화의 고찰

Ethics and Attitude to the Animals: Philosophical Perspectives

본 연구는 동물을 대하는 인간의 태도와 윤리에 관한 연구로서, 먼저 시대에 따른 철학자들의 동물윤리에 대한 인식을 살펴보고 그 근거와 모순점을 찾아보았다. 그리고 동물윤리가 시대적 상황에 따라 어떻게 변화되어 지금의 ‘동물해방’, ‘동물권리’, ‘동물복지’와 같은 이론들이 나오게 되었다. 중세이전까지는 철학자들은 동물이란 하찮은 존재로서 인간과는 상당히 다른 존재로 인식하였다. 따라서 동물은 인간을 위한 수단이며 다스리는 대상으로 인식하였다. 그러나 근대 이후로는 동물에 대한 존재적 가치를 인정하고 동물도 인간과 같이 하나의 권리를 가지고 있으며, 인간과 같은 복지를 누릴 수 있는 존재로 인식하게 된다. 본 연구를 통하여 향후 인간이 동물을 어떻게 대할 것인가에 대한 철학적 견지를 정리하고, 인간과 동물이 공존하면서 발전할 수 있는 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 인간은 자연환경 수호의 임무와 더불어 동물에 대한 존중과 배려를 해야 할 의무가 있다. 그것은 인간이 만물의 영장으로서 다른 생명체를 살릴 수도 있는 존재이기 때문이다. 그러기 위해서는 동물을 대하는 올바른 조기교육과 상징적 의미를 넘어 전 세계적인 법률적 제정으로 실질적인 동물에 대한 권리와 복지를 보장하여야 한다.

The purpose of this study is about human attitudes and ethics towards animals. We first brief review the philosophers ethics and attitude toward animals at each ages, and found the rationale and inconsistency among ages. From the chronological review, we could find a stream line of which the attitude of philosophers to the animals have been changed from the ancient to the modern times at the perspective of ‘animal liberation’, ‘animal right’, and ‘animal welfare’, etc. Prior to the Middle Ages, philosophers recognized that animals were insignificant and very different from humans. Thus, animals were recognized as a means for human beings and a controlling subject. However, since modern times, we recognize the existential value of animals, and animals have the same rights as human beings and are recognized as beings who can enjoy the same welfare as human beings. The historical review will give us some important implications for the future philosophical development of attitude to animals for co-existence of humans and animals. Humans have a duty to respect and care for animals with the mission of protecting the natural environment. It is because human beings can save other life as a warrant of all things. In to co-exist two beings, it is necessary to guarantee the rights and welfare of animals. For this, we need to educate animal ethics for young generation, further more it is actually necessary to guarantee the rights and welfare of animals by world-wide legislation.
