민진 리의 『파친코』에 나타난 재일한인의 장소담론

Place Discourse of Koreans in Japan: Min Jin Lee’s Pachinko

한국 근대사의 문화콘텐츠에는 일본강점기, 한국전쟁, 남북 분단, 디아스포라로 이어지는 장소이동의 역사적 상황으로 인한 장소의식이 두드러진다. 피식민적 상황으로 인한 강제 이주와 고향에 대한 그리움은 장소애착으로, 동시에 정치경제적 경계에 대한 자의식과 금지된 지역에 대한 좌절의 정서는 장소상흔으로 드러나고 있다. 디아스포라적 장소의식에 공감하는 재미한인 작가 민진 리(Min Jin Lee)의 최신작『파친코』(Pachinko, 2017)에는 한국 근대사에서 형성된 재일한인들의 장소의식과 정서구조가 부각 되어있다. 본 논문에서는 장소는 역사의 동인이자, 존재의 근간을 형성한다는 시각에서, 장소성의 모티프가 분명한 『파친코』를 중심으로 재일 한인의 장소 담론을 고찰한다. 나아가 국가경계 중심의 폐쇄적 장소성을 넘어서는 탈경계적 공존의 의미와 가치를 탐색하고자 한다. 이 작품에 나타난 장소 담론의 사회적 독해 역량을 기반으로 하여, 궁극적으로 공감의 문명 공동체로서 인류 미래의 지속가능성을 향한 글로벌 시민의식의 확장을 모색한다.

Due to the modern socio-political history of territorial struggles of Japanese colonization, the Korean war, the division of South-North Korea and overseas displacement, Korean cultural contents are intermittent with a uniquely keen sense of placeness. Korean American writer, Min Jin Lee’s recently published novel Pachinko (2017), based on the Korean expatriate minority community, involves a place politics of a multi-layered matrix of topophilia and topophobia. Pachinko strongly questions a rigid understanding of territorial boundaries of closed nationalism and expands a strong sense of a transnational outlook. This paper proposes Pachinko as a literary text for the civic concern of global citizenship to envision the empathetic civilization. The discussion of place politics in literature ultimately leads to the enhancement of the democratic value of coexistence as global citizens, and the empathetic extension of the global awareness of the human life circle for the sustainability of the human future.
