리드의 인식론에 관한 덕 책임론적 해석

Interpreting Reid as a Virtue Responsibilist

이 논문은 현대 인식론에서 인식 정당화 외재론의 전형으로 해석되는 토 마스 리드의 인식론을 기존의 해석과는 다르게 내재론적 경향성을 띄는 덕 책임론 으로 해석하는 것을 그 목적으로 삼고 있다. 논문의 전반부에서는 리드의 기존 입 장을 이해하기 위해서 현대 인식론에서 다루고 있는 내재론과 외재론이 어떻게 구 별되는지 간단히 살펴보고 외재론의 예로서 리드의 인식론으로부터 사상적 영향을 많이 받았다고 간주되는 플란팅가의 적합 기능론을 살펴볼 것이다. 그런 다음 리드 의 인식론이 왜 외재론의 전형으로 간주되는지를 회의주의자의 공격에 대한 리드의 인식론적 대응과 연결하여 파악함으로써 리드 인식론의 기존 입장을 정리할 것이 다. 논문의 후반부에서는 리드의 인식론을 덕 책임론과 연결시키기 위해서 우선 덕 인식론의 두 입장인 덕 신빙론과 덕 책임론의 특징이 무엇인지 살펴 본 후 리드의 철학체계에서 덕 개념을 다루고 있는 행위 이론의 내용이 무엇인지 간단히 살펴보 고 리드의 행위 이론과 인식론 사이에 구조적 유사성이 있다는 사실을 바탕으로 리드의 인식론을 좁은 의미의 지적인 덕 개념을 포함하는 덕 책임론으로 해석할 수 있음을 보이고자 한다.

The aim of the paper is to interpret Reid’s epistemology, which has been regarded as a prototype of externalistic reliabilism, into virtue responsibilism. For achieving it, in the first half, I will sketch out what epistemic interalism and externalism are and then look into Plantinga’s proper functionism as one example of externalism, which has been said to be akin to Reid’s epistemology. After that, I will explian what Reid theory of knowledge is and where the externalistic elements lies in. In the second half, I will explain what virtue epistemology is and what its subclasses are: virtue reliabilism and virtue responsibilism. After that, under the assumption that there is parallelism between Reid’s theory of action and his epistemology, I will first explain what Reid’s theory of action is. And then I will claim that there are elements which can be understood as intellectual virtues in this epistemology, and therefore his theory of knowledge can be interpreted as virtue responsibilism.
