The Mediating Effects of Achievement Goals on the Relationship between Grit and Academic Achievement

연구 목적: 본 연구에서는 그릿, 성취목표, 학업성취의 구조적 관계에서 성취목표의 매개효과를 알아보고, 이러한 관계가 교과별로 어떤 차이가 있는지 알아보고자 하였다. 연구 방법: 연구를 위해 초등학교 6학년 학생 총 413명의 자료를 수집하여 그릿(흥미유지, 노력지속), 성취목표(숙달목표, 규준중심 수행접근 목표, 능력중심 수행접근 목표, 규준중심 수행회피 목표, 능력중심 수행회피 목표), 학업성취도 검사(국어, 수학)를 실시한 뒤, 확인적 요인분석과 구조방정식 모형 분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과: 그릿과 성취목표의 관계에서 흥미유지와 숙달목표를 제외하고는 변인 간에 통계적으로 유의한 관계가 나타났으며, 구체적으로 흥미유지는 부적 영향을, 노력지속은 정적 영향을 미치고 있었다. 그릿과 학업성취의 관계에서 성취목표의 매개효과를 살펴본 결과 국어과에서는 능력중심 수행접근목표가 정적으로, 수학과에서는 능력중심 수행회피목표가 부적으로 각각 유의한 매개효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 논의 및 결론: 그릿의 하위요인 별로 성취목표 및 학업성취도에 차별적 예측력을 가지고 있으며 그 중 노력지속이 성취를 예측하는 요인으로서 상대적으로 큰 설명력을 지니고 있었다. 또한 그릿과 학업성취의 관계에서 성취목표의 매개효과는 성취목표의 유형과 교과 특성에 따라 달라짐을 알 수 있었다.

Purpose: This study aims to examine a mediating effect of achievement goals on the relationship between grit and academic achievement among elementary school students. Methods: A total of 413 elementary school students’ data were used for analysis. Grit (consistency of interest, perseverance of effort), achievement goal (mastery, normative performance-approach, ability-focused performance-approach, normative performance-avoidance, ability-focused performance-avoidance), and academic achievement for Korean and mathematics were measured. Results: It was found that the relationship between grit and achievement goals was significant, except for consistency of interest and mastery goal. While perseverance of effort positively predicted achievement goals, consistency of interest negatively predicted achievement goals. In terms of grit’s predicting academic achievement, ability-focused performance-approach positively mediated for Korean while ability-focused performance-avoidance negative mediated for mathematics. Conclusion: Grit s factors had differential predictive power on achievement goal and academic achievement, and perseverance of effort had a stronger relation to achievement goals than consistency of interest. There were mediating effects of achievement goals on the relationship between grit and academic achievement in elementary school students, providing information on how grit influenced academic achievement according to the types of achievement goals.
