This study was performed to investigate the comparative effects of supervision experiences versus interpersonal relation dispositions on child counselors’ countertransference management (CM) abilities. A total of 106 child counselors practicing in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Incheon areas completed the Career/Training Experiences Survey, Interpersonal Relation Dispositions Scale and Countertransference Factors Inventory. The results of this study were as follows. First, correlation analyses showed positive correlations between supervision experiences and the 4 CM abilities (self-integration, empathy, anxiety management, and conceptualization skills) as well as between independent- responsible, empathic-acceptable, and sociable-friendly dispositions and all 5 CM abilities. On the other hand, negative correlations were found between resistant-distrustful disposition and self-integration and anxiety management CM abilities. Next, the comparative influences of supervision experience vs. interpersonal relation dispositions in the prediction of each of the 5 CM abilities were examined. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses on the 5 CM abilities suggest that interpersonal relation dispositions of the child counselor are stronger predictors of CM abilities than supervision experiences. Clinical implications of these findings and components of supervision that could help improve child counselors’ countertransference management abilities are discussed.
