Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) are short peptides (IQ-27 residues in length) that are able to penetrate cell membranes and deliver large molecules and even small particles inside the cell for their biological actions. The only common feature of these peptides appears to be that they are amphipathic and net positively charged. Although the detailed mechanism by which these molecules enter cells is poorly understood, their ability to traverse the membrane into the cytoplasm has provided a new and powerful biological tool for transporting drugs across cell membranes.
