Purpose: To evaluate possible problems that can occur in treating femur midshaft fractures and to find way to prevent it. Materials and methods: Eleven patients with bilateral femur neck fracture who had operation on both leg in our hospital from January, 2001 to June, 2007 were selected. Thirty patients of same age, who had operation on unilateral femur midshaft fracture were selected as controlled group and were evaluated retrospectively. Winquist and Hansen’s classification was used for classification of the fractures. Complications and problems of each group were compared with Student-T test. Result: The average bone union period was 24.1 week (range 20-30 weeks) which was 6 weeks longer than the average of the controlled grᄋ니p (average 18.2 weeks, range 13-30 weeks) (p<0.001). Fat embolism and ARDS occurred in 3 cases and shortening of femur occurred in 1 case. There was no complication in the controlled group. Conclusion: Excessive reaming should be avoided to prevent fat embolism and adequate postoperative rehabilitation is necessary.
