Regulation of Vibrio vulnificus virulence by cyclic AMP-receptor protein

Vibrio vulnificus causes a rapid progressing fatal septicemia with a mortality rate of 50% over. Several V. vulnificus virulence traits are down-regulated by a mutation of the cya gene encoding adenyl cyclase required for the synthesis of cyclic AMP (cAMP) or of the crp gene encoding for cAMP-receptor protein (CRP), and so cya or crp null mutants would be an attractive vaccine candidate. This review briefly summarizes the role of cAMP or CRP in the virulence regulation of V. vulnificus.
