Background and objectives: The main purpose of this research is to examine the effects of aromatherapy on sleep among schizophrenic male patients. Material and method: The research that utilized the non-equivalent control group pretest-post test design was conducted on 37 male patients (22 in the experiment group, 15 in the control group) for two weeks from June 1st to 15th 2007 in a hospital. As for the aromatherapy, blended essential oil such as roman chamomile, lavender, sandalwood, and major am at be ratio F 3:2:1:1 was vaporized using an evaporator. For measuring sleep, a questionnaire of 15 questions which was developed by Oh, Song, and Kim (1988). Results: A hypothesis in this study, experimental group would have an effect on alleviation of sleep disturbance than the control group , was supported. After the aromatherapy, the comparison of the scores attained from sleep show a significant result of 2.64 on the pretest and 1.96 (p=0.003) on the post test in the experiment group, on the contrary, an no significant result of 2.40 in the pretest and 2.56 in the post test in control group (p=0.171). Conclusion: Results of this study demonstrated that the research shows that an appropriate choice of aromatherapy has effects on reducing sleep disturbance of male schizophrenic patients. Having few adversary side effects, aromatherapy is considered as an option for health care programs from the perspective of natural healing.
