In the treatment of pain syndromes of different etiologies, a change has occurred from destructive interventions to stimulation procedures such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS). It is used often in patients with persistent intractable chronic pain such as seen in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) as well as intractable angina pectoris. O f 10 patients with FBSS, stroke, spinal cord injury, CRPS who trialed tunneling percutaneous SCS, 6 achieved a greater than 50% reduction in their pain and proceeded to tunneling percutanoeus or surgical permanent implantation. After permanent SCS, all patients achieved a significant reduction in their pain. The results showed that SCS is an effective treatment for intractable chronic pain in the lower back and lower extremities what is refractory to conservative therapy.
