크리스티안 볼프의 형이상학적 정치학 - 『독일어판 정치학』의 정부형태론을 중심으로 -

Christian Wolff’s Metaphysical Politics - Focusing on Political System Theory of Deutsche Politik-

크리스티안 볼프(Christian Wolff)는 토마지우스와 함께 독일 계몽주의의 아버지로 불릴 정도로 중요한 사람이지만, ‘독단주의자’라는 명칭으로 인해 그동안 도외시되던 경향이 있었다. 특히 볼프의 정치학은 윤리학이나 자연법 등의 다른 실 천철학보다 훨씬 덜 다루어졌다. 그러나 볼프의 정치학은 ‘아버지적 사회와의 닮음’이라는 독특한 개념을 포함하고 있기에 보다 자세히 다뤄질 필요가 있다. 이에 본 논문은 볼프의 정치사상, 그 중에서도 특히 정부형태론을 조명하고, 그의 정부형태론이 형이상학을 통해 이해되었을 때라야 비로소 제대로 이해될 수 있음을 논증하려는 시도로 이루어져 있다. 정부형태론에서 볼프는 아리스토텔레스를 따라 3개의 좋은 정부형태와 3개의 나쁜 정부형태를 구분한다. 그러나 그는 아리스토텔레스류의 정부형태론을 답습하는 것에 그치지 않고, ‘아버지적 사회와의 닮음’이라는 독특한 개념을 만들어내 가장 좋은 사회의 모델로 제시함으로써 독창성을 확보한다. 이와 같은 개념을 이해하기 위해서 우리는 볼프의 형이상학을 경유해나갈 수밖에 없다. 볼프는 “가능한 것”, “질서” 그리고 “완전성”과 같은 형이상학적 개념을 등의 형이상학적 개념들을 열쇠개념(Schlüsselbegriff)으로 사용한다. 이러한 개념들이 ‘아버지 사회’라는 개념에 근거를 줌으로써 독특한 정치체제 이론을 만들어 낸다는 사실은 볼프의 정치학이 ‘형이상학적 정치학’이라는 것을 여실히 보여준다.

The main purpose of this paper is to shed light on Wolff’s politics, especially on his political system theory, and to argue that his political system theory can only be properly understood through his metaphysics. As the father of German enlightenment, there is little doubt that Christian Wolff is a significant figure, however he has been unjustly depreciated by the name, “dogmatist”. Wolff’s politics has especially been belittled, much more than his other practical philosophies, for instance ethics and philosophy of natural law. Nonetheless, Wolff’s politics is worth a closer look, because he elaborates on the concept, “a resemblance to fatherly society.” In his political system theory, along Aristotle, Wolff distinguishes three good and three bad political systems. Aside from following Aristotle’s political philosophy, Wolff secures originality by introducing the unique concept, “a resemblance to fatherly society.” And to understand this unique concept, we have to go through Wolff’s metaphysics. Wolff’s key concepts are metaphysical concepts such as what is possible , order and “completeness.” These concepts give a basis for the concept, “fatherly society”, and thereby create Wolff’s unique political system theory. This implies that Wolff’s politics is metaphysical politics.”
