유학생 학위논문에서의 헤지 표현 사용 연구: 한국어 교육 전공을 중심으로

Study on Use of Hedges in International Student Theses: Focused on the Korean Language Education Major

본 연구는 유학생 학위논문에서 헤지 표현을 분석하여 유학생들의 헤지 표현 사용 양상을 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 이것을 위해 유학생이 작성한 한국어 교육 분야의 석사 학위논문 30편에서 ‘-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다’의 출현 빈도, 논문 세부 구조별 분포, 사용 양상을 살펴보았다. 연구결과는 첫째, 세 헤지 표현은 ‘-ㄹ 수 있다 > -로 보이다 > -ㄹ 것이다’의 출현 빈도로 나타났고, ‘-ㄹ 수 있다’의 빈도는 두 헤지 표현에 비해 상대적으로 높았다. 이는 논문 세부 구조 별로도 비슷하였으며, 사용 빈도가 가장 높게 나타난 논문의 구조는 결과 및 논의였다. 둘째, 각 헤지 표현에는 고빈도로 결합하는 어휘와 형태들이 있었고, 정형화된 표현들이 사용되고 있었다. 그러나 한국어 모어 화자와 비교했을 때 유학생들은 결합 형태를 다양하게 사용하지 못하고 있었고 자연스럽지 않은 사용 양상을 보였다. 본고의 이러한 결과는 한국어 학습자들에게 헤지 표현을 교육할 때 기초 자료로 사용될 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the patterns of hedges use by international students. The study was conducted by analyzing actual hedges used in international student theses. For the purpose of the study, the researcher reviewed the frequency of use of “-ㄹ 수 있다, -ㄹ 것이다, -로 보이다” in 30 master degree theses prepared by international students, majoring in Korean Language Education. The results of the study are as follows. First, throughout the entire structure of each thesis, three hedges appeared in order of frequency of “-ㄹ 수 있다 > -로 보이다 > -ㄹ 것이다”. The frequency of “-ㄹ 수 있다” was overwhelmingly higher than that of the two other hedges. The results were similar in comparison among sub sections of each thesis. It was mostly frequently used in conclusions and discussions. Second, each hedge had vocabulary and form that were more frequently combined with formulaic expressions were also used. However, when compared to native Korean speakers, use of Korean language by international students was less natural as they were not able to use various combinations of the language. Findings of the study is expected to used for hedge education as baseline data.
