유은실 아동소설 연구 - 독자 문제를 중심으로 -

유은실은 ‘동화의 소설화 경향 논쟁’을 촉발시킨 작가이다. 이러한 논의는 그의 작품에 나타난 소설적 기법을 아동 독자가 이해할 수 없을 것이라는 우려 때문에 시작되었다. 그런데 나는 유은실 작품의 의미를 검토하기 위해서는 기법보다 주제를 더 꼼꼼하게 따져보아야 한다고 생각한다. 이 논문에서는 유은실의 작품 가운데, 내포독자와 소설의 내용이 서로 어긋나 보이는 작품을 선정하여 문제가 되는 지점을 자세하게 검토하였다. 검토 대상이 된 작품들은 모두 내포독자의 이해수준이나 인생에 대한 배경 지식으로 볼 때 어린이가 이해하기 어려울 것이라고 생각되었다. 그러나 어려움의 정도는 작품에 따라 달랐다. 어린이가 충분히 즐기기 어렵다고 생각되는 작품을 검토하다보니 아동문학의 범주를 어디까지 설정해야 하는가가 고민이 되었다. 유은실의 작품을 긍정적으로 평가하면, 아동문학이라고 해서 어린이들만 읽어야 하는 텍스트가 아니라는 주장을 가능하게 하지만, 부정적인 시각으로 본다면 아동에게는 부적절하고 어른에게 더 알맞은 텍스트라는 평가도 가능하다. 유은실의 작품은 ‘아동문학’이라는 울타리가 꼭 필요한가 하는 의문을 제기하게 한다. 우리가 살고 있는 세계와 어린이들이 변화하고 있기 때문에 아동문학도 변화하지 않을 수 없다. 너무 지나치지만 않다면 나는 유은실의 창작 방향을 지지해야 한다고 생각한다. 아동문학은 지속적으로 그 범위를 넓히거나 경계를 깨뜨리는 방향으로 진전될 것이기 때문이다.

Yoo Eun-sil is the author who sparked the Children s Fiction Trends Debate. This debate began because of concerns that the novel techniques shown in his work would not be understood by the child reader. However, I think we should examine the subject more carefully than techniques to examine the meaning of Yoo s work. So, I carefully examined the points of issue by selecting the works of Yoo Eun-sil, which are thought to be contrary to each other s content and the narrator and the novel. All of the works reviewed were thought to be difficult for children to understand, given their level of understanding and background knowledge of life. However, the degree of difficulty differed depending on the work. After reviewing works that children find difficult to enjoy, it became a question of how far the category of children s literature should be set. A positive assessment of Yoo s work makes it possible to argue that children s literature is not the only text that should be read by children, but it is also possible to say that it is inappropriate for children and more suitable for adults. Yoo s work raises the question of whether a fence called child literature is necessary. Children s literature cannot help but change because the world we live in and the children are changing. If it s not too much, I think I should support Yoo Eun-sil s creative direction. This is because children s literature will continue to expand its scope or move toward breaking boundaries.
