The purpose of this study is to develop a model of ecosystem inquiry based on systems thinking. To attain the purpose, the systemic components for the inquiry model were derived from a review of the literature with systems educators. In addition, the commonly-observed ecological phenomena in Gyorae Gotjawal Area on Jeju Island were examined and matched up with each component of systems thinking in order to identify whether each component are appropriate for the inquiry model of ecosystem. Reflecting on the components of systems thinking and ecological phenomena, we proposed a model of ecosystem inquiry focusing on developing systems thinking. The proposed model is comprised of the four steps including Identification of the system components , Analysis of the competitive relationships , Analysis of the cyclic/dynamic cooperation , and Analysis of the delayed/hidden cooperation . The findings provide the first step in designing effective teaching and learning strategies for developing systems thinking in the biological education field.
