영어 관사 체계의 추상성의 위계화

A Hierarchy of Abstractness on the Article System of English

제 2언어 습득 연구에 따르면, 한국어, 일본어, 중국어 등과 같이 모국어에 관사 체계를 갖고 있지 않는 영어 학습자들은 영어의 관사 체계(∅, a(n), the)를 습득하기 용이하지 않다는 것이다. 더구나 문법서에서 관사에 대한 설명은 단편적이고 통합적이지 않다. 이 같은 관사 체계 습득의 문제점에 대한 가능한 방안을 탐색하기 위해, 의미론의 의미자질의 개념을 이용하여 본 연구에서는 영어 관사 체계를 재분석하고자 한다. 이 같은 연구 목적을 위해, 영어 관사 체계에 [±abstractness]/[±concreteness]라는 의미자질을 도입하여, 영어의 관사 체계를 추상성에 따른 위계화(A Hierarchy of Abstractness on the Article System of English)를 제안한다. 또한 이를 실제 관사의 사용 사례에 적용하여 이 같이 구성한 관사 체계의 위계도의 타당성을 검증하고자 한다. 마지막으로 관사 습득에 어려움을 겪고 있는 영어 학습자들에게 관사 체계의 위계도를 일종의 문법적 직관으로 제공하여 영어 관사 습득에 대한 유용한 수단을 제공하고자 한다.

According to the result of the Second Language Acquisition (SLA) studies, English learners whose native language is Korean, Japanese, and Chinese have difficulty in acquiring the article system of English (zero article (∅), a(n), the). Moreover, it can be asserted that the article system of English seems to be explained in an isolated and an unintegrated way in most existing grammar books. In order to cope with this problem, this study will explore into revisiting the English article system. For this, this study introduces semantic features such as [±abstractness], [±concreteness] into the system, resulting in the hierarchy of Abstractness on the article system (∅, a(n), the) of English. Also, it applies the hierarchy of the systems in actual use of articles. Finally, the hierarchy is supposed to help Korean learners of English to acquire the English article system by providing grammatical ‘intuition’ or ‘sense’ for the article system article of English.
