재혼가족 계부모의 역할긴장과 우울의 관계에서 계부모-배우자 간 의사소통의 매개효과 연구 - 계부모의 성차를 중심으로 -

A Study on the Mediating Effect of Couple Communication between the Relationship of the Stepparents’ Role Strain and Their Depression, Focused on Gender Difference

본 연구는 계부모역할에서 오는 역할긴장이 계부모의 우울에 미치는 영향에서 배우자와의 의사소통이 가지는 매개효과를 성차를 중심으로 검증하였다. 재혼가족적응에 가장 어려움이 되는 문제인 계부모 역할긴장과 그 결과로서의 우울, 매개변인으로서의 계부모-배우자 간 의사소통 간의 관계를 검증하기 위해 본 연구는 재혼자 인터넷카페 및 리서치회사를 통해 18세 이하 계자녀를 둔 남녀 226명의 자료를 수집하여 구조방정식을 사용하여 분석하였다. 계부모 역할긴장과 우울 수준은 계모가 계부에 비해, 그리고 계부모-배우자 간 의사소통수준은 계부가 더 높은 수준으로 지각하는 것으로 나타나 성별 차이를 확인하였다. 또한, 역할긴장이 우울에 미치는 영향에서 계부모-배우자 간 의사소통은 부분적인 매개효과를 나타내는 것으로 확인되었는데, 다집단 분석을 통해 살펴본 결과 성별 차이가 나타났다. 즉, 계부의 경우 계부모-배우자 간 의사소통이 역할긴장과 우울의 관계를 완전 매개하는 반면, 계모의 경우 계부모-배우자 간 의사소통의 부분매개효과와 더불어 역할긴장이 우울에 미치는 직접효과가 여전히 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과는 계부모의 역할긴장문제가 우울로 이어지는 매개로서 계부모-배우자 간 의사소통의 중요성을 시사하고 있으나, 여성재혼자들이 경험하는 계모역할의 어려움이 남성재혼자와는 다른 양상으로 정신건강에 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여주고 있다.

Objectives: This study explored the mediating effect of couple communication between the relationship of step-parents’ role strain and their depression, focusing on the gender difference of the stepparent. Methods: 226 stepmothers and stepfathers answered the survey questionnaire administered online. Data were analyzed using structural equations. Results: Gender differences were found, which showed higher role strain and depression levels along with lower couple communication level among stepmothers in contrast to stepfathers. Couple communication showed a partial mediating effect on the effects of role strain and depression. However, the mediating model was different by gender. Couple communication completely mediated the relationship between role strain and depression among stepfathers, while in the case of stepmothers, the direct effects of role tension to depression was still significant in addition to couple communication’s partial mediating effect. Conclusions: The results imply the importance of marital communication in intervening the harmful effects of stepparents’ role strain on their depression. Moreover, the gender differences shown from the results need to be further explored.
