The Effect of Art Therapy Program on Receptive and Expressive Language of Mentally Retarded Children

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the art therapy program on receptive and expressive language of mentally retarded children. The subjects in this study were four children who had something wrong with receptive language and expressive language. The art therapy program was provided in 30 sessions, twice a week, 40minutes each ession, to assist them to improve their receptive and expressive language. To determine the effect of the art therapy program on the language, PPVT, check list test and statistics process were utilized. The major findings were as follows: First, the art therapy program was effective in improving the receptive language of the mentally retarded children. PPVT showed that their abilities of the receptive language were improved form three year old to four year old on the everage. And check list test showed that their abilities of the receptive language were also increased over noun, adjective, adverb, pronoun, verb and social language. And statistics process also showed that the language of the mentally retarded children underwent a positive change through the art theraphy. Second, an art therapy program helped mentally retarded children to improve their expressive language. The check list test about expressive language showed that noun, adjective, adverb, pronoun, social language of the mentally retarded children were improved. And statistics process also showed that the remarkable improvement of their expressive language except for verb. As sessions went on expressive language of the mentally retarded children was improved gradually. The findings of the syudy suggested that the art theraphy program had a positive effect on the receptive and expressive language of mentally retarded children. To help the mentally retarded children with language problem, various art therapy program and practical study should be developed.
