This Study aimed to find out the effect of group art therapy on the social support appraisal of children in poverty. For this study 15 children who attended after-school of children s center in Nowon-gu, Seoul and showed emotional and psychosocial maladjustments were selected. They consisted of 2 groups, a higher grade and a lower grade of elementary school students. 18 Group art therapy programs were operated from September 2007 to January 2008. Before and after the group art therapy programs the test of the social support appraisal scale(SSAS) was used. The social support appraisal of the participant children without difference of grade resulted in a significant increase on average. But the family and teacher support appraisals as subordinate factors showed non-significant results. This study could be expected to contribute the group art therapy to positive effects on children in poverty. Furthermore the plan for the increase of teacher and family support appraisal were discussed.
