A Study on the Competencies Of Preschool Teachers

Disabled children s integrated education has an important meaning. Childhood is proper time in integrating because special children and normal differ little in the light of development at this period. Accordingly, the most important, preschool teachers with competence to take charge in early integrated education should be provided. Preschool teachers competence should be improved to promote the quality of school education. In addition, it is required to develop, employ, and train good teachers in order to enhance such competence. Therefore, this study examined competence needed to preschool teachers in Korea where early integrated education has been encouraged recently, its actual conditions, and obstacle factors to its development, using self-assessment and others assessment such as the head of preschool. This study selected 139 teachers and heads of preschool in Seoul and Incheon to conduct research. The findings of obstacle factors to development of competence indicates that new teachers were most affected by lack of parents understanding and lack of time ; medium teachers by miscellaneous business other than class , lack of parents understanding , and poor pay and senior by lack of in-service training . To promote preschool teachers competence, such obstacle factors as lack of parents understanding , lack of time , miscellaneous business other than class , and poor pay should be removed. Also, it is required to establish curriculum in order to acquire knowledge of understanding disability in field as well as training education and to provide an opportunity of in-service training in field.
