退高往復書의 意義와 朝鮮儒學史에서의 위상

Significance of Toegowangbokseo and Status in Confucian History of Joseon Period

‘퇴고왕복서(退高往復書)’는 16세기 중엽에 퇴계(退溪) 이황(李滉: 1501∼1570)과 고봉(高峯) 기대승(奇大升: 1527∼1572)이 주고 받은 약 130편 가량의 서한을 모아서 엮은 책이다. 뒷날 이 책 가운데서 사단(四端)⋅칠정(七情)을 리기(理氣)에 배치하는 내용과 관련된 것을 따로 뽑아 별도의 책으로 엮고 ‘퇴고사칠리기왕복서(退高四七理氣往復書)’라 하였다. 이 논문에서는 이 두 책이 지닌 의의(義意)와 학술사적 위상에 대해 개괄적으로 고찰하였다. 󰡔퇴고사칠리기왕복서󰡕는 조선 중기 이후로 성리학이 성행하면서 학자들의 필독서, 지침서가 되었다. 출판되기 이전부터 전사(轉寫)되어 널리 읽혀지면서 사실상 조선 성리학의 교재 구실을 하였다. 이에 비해 󰡔퇴고왕복서󰡕는 상대적으로 주목을 덜 받았다. 학술적 내용이 많지 않다는 점이 주된 이유라고 생각된다. 이 책에는 이황과 기대승의 인간적-학자적 면모, 구도(求道)하는 자세, 학문과 정치에서의 소망과 열정 등이 담겨 있다. 또한 상호 교류와 소통으로 학문과 인격을 넓히고 연마해 나가는 유익함(相長之益)도 엿볼 수 있다. ‘소통학(疏通學) 교재’, ‘인생학 교재’라 평가할 만하다. 󰡔퇴고사칠리기왕복서󰡕에 뒤지지 않는다. 이 두 책은 실로 ‘의도되지 않은 저술’, ‘명저 아닌 명저’라고 하겠다.

‘Toegowangbokseo (退高往復書)’ is a book with about 130 letters that Toegye (退溪) Lee Hwang (李滉) corresponded with Gobong (高峯) Gi Daeseung (奇大升) in the middle of 16th century. Among those letters, ones that covered Four Bases (四端) and Seven Feelings (七情) upon Ligi (理氣) were separately collected as another book afterwards, which was entitled ‘Toegosachilligiwangbokseo (退高四七理氣往復書).’ This study is to generally examine significance of these two books and their status in scholarly history. Along with prevalence of Neo-Confucianism since the mid-Joseon period, Toegosachilligiwangbokseo became a must-read and guide for scholars. As it had already been transcribed and widely read even before its publication, it actually served as a textbook of Joseon’s Neo-Confucianism. Toegowangbokseo, however, drew relatively less attention. The reason is assumed to have less scholarly contents. This book demonstrates humane and scholarly aspects of Lee Hwang and Gi Daeseung, their truth-seeking attitude, wishes and passion in studies and politics. It also shows benefits from expanding and cultivating academic realm and personality through mutual exchange and communication. It deserves to be called ‘a textbook of communication studies’ and ‘a textbook of life studies.’ It is as competitive as Toegosachilligiwangbokseo. These two books can be called ‘unintended writing’ and ‘accidental masterpiece.’
