퇴계의 교육과 퇴계서찰

A Study on Education of Toegye and Toegye Letters

퇴계서찰은 ‘인간 퇴계’를 이해하는 보고(寶庫)이다. 우리는 누구라도 퇴계서찰을 숙독하면 숙독할수록 ‘인간적인 너무나도 인간적인 퇴계’를 발견할 수 있다. 우리는 퇴계서찰에서 ‘퇴계의 마음’을 가장 적확(的確)히 읽을 수 있다. 퇴계서찰은 퇴계의 소소한 일상생활과 원대한 내면세계뿐만 아니라 다른 사람과의 인적 교류와 학문적 토론을 엿볼 수 있는 귀중한 자료이다. 퇴계는 한 평생 3,200여 통의 서찰을 남겼다. 그러나 필자는 퇴계서찰 중에서 번역된 467편을 분석하여 퇴계가 추구했던 교육론을 논의했다. 논의된 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 교육목적의 측면에서 보면, 퇴계는 성인에 도달하기 위한 지경과 원대한 입지를 강조했다. 퇴계에게 있어 성인은 보편타당한 가치의 실현자이다. 성인에 도달하기 위해 퇴계는 주체적 성찰과 실천적 가치의 실현에 핵심인 지경과, 성학을 달성하려는 입지를 초학자의 요법(要法)으로 삼았다. 둘째, 교육내용의 측면에서 보면, 퇴계는 강상 윤리로서 효제와 배려를 중시했고, 사회 윤리로서 출처와 율신을 강조했다. 퇴계는 효제와 배려의 가치교육을 위해 󰡔소학󰡕과 󰡔효경󰡕을 중요한 교과로 선택하여 손자녀에게 가르쳤다. 또한 퇴계는 출처를 위해 출사(出仕)와 치사(致仕)의 도리를 초학자에게 강조했고, 율신을 위해 명예욕과 허명(虛名)의 위험을 곡진하게 손자녀에게 가르쳤다. 셋째, 교육방법에 측면에서 보면, 퇴계는 인재시교(因材施敎)와 하학상달(下學上達)의 원리를 강조했다. 퇴계는 공부하는 자질과 능력에 따라 개인차를 고려하여 손자녀와 노비들을 가르쳤다. 또한 퇴계는 일상생활의 원리를 터득한 이후에 성리학을 공부해야 한다고 주장했다. 이러한 퇴계의 개인차에 의한 교육방법과 단계적 적용에 관한 교수방법은 현대교육이론에도 활용될 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to find the educational implications of Toegye Letters(退溪書札). Toegye Letters is the best materials for understanding Toegye’s Thought. Traditional society was considered as one of the knowledge and behavior, and identified the academic and personality. Also the educational philosophy of Toegye based on traditional education of Confucianism. In some ways these current education method is different from our emotions, and actually ineffective in part. Therefore, this study is to analyze the Toegye Letters. The conclusion of this study are follows. First, in terms of educational purpose, Toegye Letters was very emphatic on the Jigyeong(持敬; maintained Gyeong) and ybji(立志; the decision of purpose in life) Second, in terms of educational contents, Toegye Letters was very emphatic on the Filial duty(孝) and the care(配慮), Third, in terms of educational method, Toegye Letters was very emphatic on the education of individual differences(因材施敎) and the level-based education from a fundamental knowledge to a higher rank knowledge(下學上達).
