본 연구의 목적은 조선시대에 서원을 운영하는 근간이 되었던 ‘원규(院規)’에서 엿보이는 현대 교육적 시사점을 도출하고, 이 공간에서 행해졌던 교육방법의 현대적 활용 방안을 고찰하는 것이다. 그리고 이를 통해 서원에 대한 교육 현장의 관심을 고취시키는 것이 본 연구의 궁극적인 목적이다. 이러한 연구 목적의 달성을 위해, ⓐ 본 연구에서는 먼저 이황의 ‘이산서원 원규’, 이이의 ‘은병정사 학규’, 정구의 ‘도동서원 원규’ 등을 분석하여, 현대 교육적 시사점을 세 가지로 도출하였다. 첫째는 서원의 원규가 학교의 본질 및 가치가 무엇인지 재고할 수 있는 기회를 준다는 점이고, 둘째는 공부의 근본적인 목적과 요구되는 자세가 무엇인지 숙고할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 점이며, 셋째는 스승과 제자 사이의 관계, 즉 사도와 존사에 대해 생각할 수 있는 기회를 부여한다는 점이다. ⓑ 다음으로 본 연구에서는 정구의 ‘강법’, 김원행의 ‘석실서원 강규’, 호계서원의 ｢강회 일기｣ 등을 분석하여, 서원 강회의 현대 교육적 활용 방안을 두 가지 측면에서 고찰하였다. 첫째는 󰡔2015 도덕과 교육과정󰡕에서 신설된 <고전과 윤리> 과목의 실제 수업 운영에서 강회의 규칙이나 진행 순서 등을 적극 활용할 수 있다는 것이고, 둘째는 강회에서 엿볼 수 있는 유생들의 토론 태도 및 기법을 <윤리와 사상> 과목의 수업에서 활용할 수 있다는 것이다. ⓒ 마지막으로 본 연구에서는 두 가지 후속과제들에 대해 언급하였다. 첫째는 강회를 활용한 교육방법을 일반화된 교수⋅학습 및 평가 방법의 수준으로 승화시켜 현장에 보급하고 다시 현장의 피드백(feedback)을 받아 지속적으로 개선해 나가야 한다는 것이고, 둘째는 발굴되지 않았거나 제대로 번역되지 않은 ‘서원지’ 등을 꾸준히 발굴, 번역 및 소개함으로써 서원에서 발견할 수 있는 생동적인 강회의 모습을 포착해야 한다는 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to draw modern educational implications from wongyu(院規), which was the foundation of seowon(書院) during the Joseon Dynasty, and to consider the modern use of the educational methods practiced in seowon. And the ultimate purpose of this study is to promote the interest of the educational field about the seowon. ⓐ This study first analyzed various kinds of wongyus and drew three modern educational implications. First, wongyu presents an opportunity to reconsider what the nature and value of the school is. Second, wongyu provides an opportunity to contemplate the fundamental purpose of study and what posture is required. Third, wongyu gives an opportunity to think about the right relationship between the teacher and the student. ⓑ This study then analyzed the data on ganghye(講會) and considered two aspects of the modern educational use of seowon ganghye. First, the rules of ganghye or the order of progress can be actively utilized in the actual operation of the new subject <Classics and Ethics>. Second, the debate attitudes and techniques of the Confucian scholar as seen in ganghye can be used in the class of <Ethics and Thoughts>. ⓒ Finally, this study mentioned two follow-up tasks. First, the education method using ganghye should be developed to the level of generalized teaching learning and evaluation method, distributed to the class site, and continuously improved after receiving feedback from the site. Second, by steadily excavating, translating and introducing materials that have not been excavated or properly translated, we should capture the lively ganghye we can find in seowon during the Joseon Dynasty.
