미술관교육에서의 해석의 문제에 대한 탐구 : S. Sontag의 감성학 논의를 기반으로

A Study on the Problem of Interpretation in Art Museum Education: S. Sontag s Discussion of Emotional Studies

현대 해석학의 논의에서 끊임없이 논쟁거리가 되고 있는 문제 중 하나는 ‘해석이 반드시 필요한가?’이다. 이러한 논의는 자연스럽게 미술관에서의 작품 해석을 어디까지 교육적으로 지원해주어야 하는 문제와 관련이 있다. 미술관에서의 작품이나 텍스트의 해석 행위가 관람객이나 독자의 이해를 돕기도 하지만, 다른 한편으로는 감상의 폭을 제한함으로써 작품이나 텍스트에 대한 이해를 방해하기도 한다. 미술관의 예술작품을 해석하는 행위는 관람객과 예술작품 간의 상호작용을 이끌기도 하지만 때로는 그들의 관계를 분리한다. 본 연구에서는 현대 해석학과 미술관교육에서 끊임없이 제기되고 있는 해석행위에 대한 문제를 Sontag의 평론집 「해석에 반대한다 (200 2)」속에 제시되는 감성학적 관점에서 검토하였다. 먼저 미술관에서의 전시해설과 해석에 대한 논의에 대해 살펴본 뒤, 해석행위에 대한 Sontag의 비판적 논의를 살펴보았다. Sontag은 예술작품에서 어떤 의미나 가치를 찾으려고 하는 해석 행위를 비판하고, 예술작품을 있는 그대로 경험할 것을 강조하고 있다. Sontag에 따르면 너무 체계화된 이론과 논리는 예술작품에로의 감성적 접근 자체를 차단할 수 있고 경우에 따라서는 이론가들의 폭력성에 의해 작품해석들이 이루어지게 된다. 이러한 입장은 미술관교육에서 관람객들이 어떻게 작품을 그리고 작품해석의 문제를 대할 수 있게 할 것인가의 문제와 관련된다.

One of the repetitive issues in the discussion of modern interpretations is Is interpretation absolutely necessary? . Interpretation of works or texts may help visitors or readers to understand, but on the other hand, it may hinder understanding of works or texts by limiting the breadth of appreciation. Discussions of these interpretations also naturally lead to problems of interpretation in art museum education. The act of interpreting art works in museums also leads to interaction between visitors and artworks, but sometimes because it separates their relationships. In this study, Sontag s critique book <Against Interpretation> (2002) was analyzed to discuss the issue of analytical behavior that is being raised in modern interpretation and museum education. First of all, I examined the discussion of display commentary and interpretation in the museum, and then looked at Sontag s sense of criticism of interpretation and her position in dealing with art. Sontag criticized the interpretative behavior of trying to find any meaning or value in a work of art, and emphasized to experience it as it is. Based on these arguments, the discussion was concluded by suggesting interpretations in art museum education and appreciation of artwork.
