노화와 죽음에 대한 교육학적 성찰 - Elias의 문화사회학적 논의를 기반으로 -

A Pedagogical Reflections on Aging and Death

학문적으로 노화와 죽음의 문제는 우리사회에서는 지금까지 주로 심리학적 관점에서 다루어져왔다. 심리학적 관점에서는 노년시기와 죽음을 맞이하는 단계에서의 이상적인 발달과업들이 제시된다. 노년기를 성공적으로 보내기 위해서 수행해야 하는 교육적 과제들과 웰다잉을 위하여 죽음대비교육과 같은 교육프로그램들이 제공된다. 이러한 방식의 진단과 제안은 노화와 죽음이라는문제와 관계하는 우리들의 생각, 관점, 인식을 근본적으로 전환하기는 어렵다. 이에 사회학자인Elias는 의학적, 심리학적 진단이 아닌 사회학적 진단을 통해서 현대사회의 노화와 고독의 문제를바라보는 새로운 시선을 제공한다. 그의 진단에 따르면 젊은 세대들이 함몰되어 있는 불멸성신화, 사회가 가지고 있는 노인세대의 비위생성담론 등은 노화와 죽음에 대한 세대 간의 소통과 이해를어렵게 하고 있다. 특히 젊은 세대의 신체노화체험의 한계는 세대 간 소통의 본질적 어려움이 노정된다. 이에 Elias는 노화와 죽음을 결과가 아닌 하나의 과정으로 인식할 것을 제안한다. 이에 본연구는 Elias의 진단에 기반한 교육학의 과제로서 인간의 유한성을 교육학적으로 주제화해야 하고우정과 이웃과 같은 교육적 실천의 중요성을 교육적 사고와 실천의 중심에 놓도록 할 필요가 있음을 시사하였다.

To date, the issues of aging and death in Korea have been mainly dealt from an acadamic psychological perspective. From a psychological perspective, ideal development taske are suggested at the stages of old age and death. A variety of educational programs are provided such as educational tasks required to enjoy old age sussessfully and death coping education for well-dying. However, with this typs of diagnosis and suggestion, it is difficult to fundamentally change our thoughts, perspectives and perceptions regarding the issues of aging and death. Therefore, Elias, sociologist, offers a new perspective on the issues of aging and loneliness in modern society through sociological diagnosis, not medical and psychological diagnosis. According to his diagnosis, immortal mythology in which young generations are immersed, and the unsanitary discourse of the elderly generation in society habe made it difficult to communicate and understand between generations on aging and death. In particular, the limitations of the physical aging experience of younger generations reveal the inherent difficulties of intergenerational communication. For this reason, Elias suggests that aging and death should be recognized as a process, not as a result. The task of pedagogy based on the diagnosis of Elias needs to pedagogically topicalize the finiteness of human beings and to place the importance of educational practice such as friendship and neighborhood at the center of educational thinking andd practice.
