텍스트 마이닝 기법을 활용한 국내 외국인 유학생 연구 동향 분석: 시기별 연구주제 변화 탐색

How Have International Students in Korea Been Studied?: Application of Text Mining and Topic Modeling to Understand Research Trends

이 연구는 고등교육기관에서 수학하는 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 진행된 국내 학술연구들의 경향을 경험적으로 검증하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 한국학술지인용색인(KCI)에서 외국인 유학생과 관련한 학술 논문의 초록을 수집하였으며, 텍스트 마이닝과 토픽 모델링 기법을 활용해 분석한결과 10개의 핵심 연구주제가 도출되었다. 도출된 연구주제는 큰 틀에서 두 범주로 나눌 수 있었다. 소비나 건강, 소통과 같이 유학생의 일상생활을 주목한 연구들과 교육과정, 유학 동기 및 진로, 유학생 유치정책과 같이 유학생을 학습자로서 바라보는 연구들로 구분되었다. 유학생의 한국사회 적응 문제는 두 범주에서 공통적으로 다루어지고 있었다. 연구주제의 시기별 변화양상을 살펴보면 초기에는다수의 연구가 유학생 유치정책에 초점을 맞추어 수행된 것으로 나타난다. 그러나 시간이 지남에 따라 교육, 진로, 생활, 문화 등으로 연구의 폭이 확장되었을 뿐만 아니라 연구방법론의 다양성도 증가하였다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 토대로 연구의 마지막에서는 외국인 유학생 연구의 방향성을 제시하는동시에 체계적 자료구축의 필요성을 논의하였다.

This study aimed to understand trends in studies about international students in Korean higher education institutes. The abstracts of journal articles drawn from the Korean Academic Journal Index database were analyzed by techniques of text mining and topic modeling. The literature was classified into 10 topics, which were founded upon two perspectives: understanding international students as learners and immigrants. Studies based on the former perspective regarded policies to attract international students, motivations to study abroad, and methods to build better curriculum and programs. Studies based on the latter perspective investigated international students’ behaviors in relation to consumption, health, and media communication. Topics about international students’ adaptation were involved in both perspectives. Research trends in international students moved from topics concentrating on why and how to attract international students to topics focusing on various issues centering around international students. Based on these findings, this study discussed missing pieces in the literature and suggested the need for systematic data collection at the national level.
