초등교사의 국악 교육 인식에 관한 연구 - 제주지역을 중심으로 -

A Study on Elementary Schoolteachers’ Consciousness about Gugak Education - focus on elementary schoolteachers in Jeju -

다변화되는 다문화 시대에 우리의 것을 지키고 우리의 정체성이 곧 세계화라는 의식의 흐름에 따라 최근의 음악과 교육과정 변화를 살펴볼 때 가장 큰 변화는 국악 교육 비중의 증가라고 볼 수 있다. 음악과 교육과정의 변화에 따라 국악 교육의 양적･질적 제고 향상으로 국악 제재곡도 다양하게 늘어나고 있지만, 여전히 학교 현장 학생들은 국악보다 서양음악, 동요보다 대중음악에 익숙함이 학년이 올라갈수록 두드러지게 나타나고 있다. 섬이라는 지역적 특성을 지닌 제주특별자치도는 육지에 비해 우리의 문화를 총체적으로 살펴볼 수 있는 전문적인 대규모의 국악공연도 쉽게 접할 수 없을뿐더러, 국악전공의 교육기관이 전무한 실정이기에, 더더욱 초등학교 교육을 담당하는 교사들의 영향력이 크다고 하겠다. 이는 학교 현장에서 학생들과 직접적으로 만나는 교사들의 국악 교육 교수･학습 능력이야말로 제주지역의 국악 교육을 강화시킬 수 있는 가장 중요한 요인이기 때문이다. 더욱이 제주지역의 초등교사는 임용 과목에 국악 실기가 포함되어 있는 유일한 지역인 만큼 타 지역에 비해 상대적으로 초등교사의 국악 실기 능력을 갖추었다 할 수 있으나, 지역적 한계로 이 관심을 이어나갈 수 있는 제반 시설이 부족한 것이 현실이다. 이에 제주지역 초등학교 교사들은 국악 교육에 대하여 어떠한 생각을 가지고 있는지를 설문을 통해 조사하고, 그 설문 결과를 분석하여 봄으로써 국악 교육 활성화를 위해 어떤 부분에 노력을 기울여야 할지 알아보는 것이 본 연구의 목적이며, 이 연구의 결과는 앞으로 제주지역 초등 음악교육 중 국악 교육의 방향 제시를 위한 자료로 활용될 것으로 본다.

This study analyzed 19 questions of the categories “Interest in Gugak Education,” “Status of Gugak Education,” “Projects for Supporting School and Art Instructors,”and “Proposals for Activating Gugak Education” to investigate the awareness of Gugak education among elementary schoolteachers in Jeju. Although their level of interest in Gugak was found to be somewhat low, all of them were aware of the need for Gugak education. Many teachers lack the leadership skills required for imparting knowledge on Gugak in music classes, and are keen to change this through training in Gugak and the development of various media materials, among other things. Results of this study clarify that the next step is an indication of the direction in which the education of Korean traditional music in Jeju should proceed. First, it is necessary to increase all primary schoolteachers’ interest in Gugak before they take a teacher-certification exam, and not after appointment; this should be done by setting up an institutional system so that the portion of Gugak in the music curriculum of the education colleges that train prospective primary school teachers can be carried out by increasing the proportion of Gugak, which currently accounts for 40 percent of the music education in elementary schools. Second, we should fully develop and disseminate various media materials that can arouse students’ interest in Gugak classes, as well as consider ways to develop YouTube channels and online games on Gugak that explain it in a fun and easy manner, so that students can learn it on their own by “playing.” Third, we need to increase the number of 1:1 mixed classes where lessons are conducted by combining the practical skills of Gugak art instructors with the educational expertise of front-line. Fourth, we should ensure more opportunities to share information on Gugak training and to learn it for teachers after the appointment. It is also necessary to consider developing an online platform that recommends helpful training for teachers through simple test questions that evaluate their ability to teach Korean classical music.
