공학계열 대학생들의 기술의 본성(NOT)에 대한 인식 조사

A Survey on the Concepts of the College Students in Engineering Departments about the Nature of Technology(NOT)

이 연구는 공학계열 대학생들의 기술의 본성(NOT)에 대한 인식 조사를 위하 여 6개 영역의 NOT(Liou, 2015) 설문 도구를 통하여 인식 수준을 조사하고, 개 방형 질문을 통하여 학생들이 갖고 있는 6개 영역별 NOT에 대한 인식 분포와 구체적인 개념 내용을 조사하였다. 본 연구를 위하여 수도권 소재 종합대학 공 학계열 대학생 총 328명이 참여하였으며, 분석의 신뢰도는 설문검사에서는 Cronbach’s alpha 0.96, 개방형 응답 내용 분석은 0.89로 높은 신뢰도를 보였 다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 우리나라 공학계열 대학생들의 NOT 인식 수준은 평균 3.86으로 비교적 높은 수준으로 잘 이해하고 있는 것으로 나타났 다. 특히, 학생들은 기술을 단순히 인공물이나 도구로 인식하기보다는 혁신과 변화를 유도하는 사회적 역할로 인식하고 있었다. 둘째, 기술의 본성(NOT) 이 해 수준에 있어서 공학계열 여학생들의 인식 수준이 전반적으로 약간 높게 나 타났으며, 특히 일부 NOT 영역에서 남학생들보다 유의미한 수준( p <.05, p <.01) 으로 높았으나 전공에 대한 유의미한 수준의 차이는 없는 것으로 나타났다. 셋 째, 학생들이 주로 갖고 있는 개념에 대한 6개 NOT 영역 빈도 분포에서 학생 들은 기술을 주로 혁신적 변화를 이끄는 사회적 역할 측면으로 빈번하게 인식 하였으며, 상대적으로 기술의 역사에 대한 인식은 적은 분포로 나타났다. 따라 서 우리나라 공학계열 대학생들은 복합적이고 추상적인 기술철학적 개념들을 비교적 높은 수준으로 잘 이해하고, 각 영역별 구체적인 개념을 다양하게 잘 이해하고 있다고 말할 수 있다.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the concepts of students’in engineering department regard to the nature of technology(NOT) using the survey developed based on the six domains of the NOT(Liou, 2015) as well as the open-ended questionnaire about the NOT. The participants of the study were 336 students in the department of engineering of the university located in metropolitan area. The reliability of the study was calculated by Cronbach’s alpha as 0.96 for the survey and 0.89 for the open-ended questionnaire. The results are follows. First, the students possess the relatively high level of conceptions about the NOT with the mean of 3.86 for the survey. Significantly, the students recognize the technology as the social activity leading of progress and innovation of society rather than just thinking of tools and artifacts for technology. Second, overall female students possess better understanding about the NOT than male students and the difference of means between female and male students for the NOT is statistically significant(( p <.05, p <.01). By contrast, there is no significant difference among the majors of students for understanding of the NOT. Third, while the students frequently understand the technology as the role of progress and innovation in society, they rarely recognize the history of technology. Therefore, the students in department of engineering understand well the aspects of technological philosophy, which are abstract and complex and also possess the various of nature of technology with concrete concepts.
