Strategies for Transitions from the College to the Enterprise

As the modern society is getting rapidly changed and educational inflation rate is getting higher, labor market prefers the workers with high skills and knowledge rather than workers with only high educational attainment. Hence, if workers with high educational attainment do not have the adequate knowledge and skills which labor market needs, it is too hard to get a decent job. Nevertheless, colleges in Korea had not tried to get their students to enter the labor market and reflect labor market needs on their administration an curriculum, sufficiently. Recently, they have tried to start the various efforts which are gotten college graduates to enter the labor market. The purpose of this paper is to examine the various programs and system related to school to work transitions which colleges perform recently and analyze the major factors which significantly influence labor market entry. This research developed the questionnaire for examining the programs and systems related the school to work transitions of Korean colleges. The questionnaires were distributed to 167 two year colleges and 237 four year colleges all over the nation from May, 2002 to July, 2002. Of them, finally, 124 two-year colleges and 119 four-year colleges were responded to questionnaires. The research results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regressions. The major results of this research indicated as it follows: 1. The colleges do not have enough experts related to school to work transition. Accordingly, career counselling and guidance systems for college students are not working in colleges successfully. 2. As the efforts and concerns of enterprise for interacting between enterprise and college are likely to be lack, the interactions between enterprise and college could not carry out sufficiently. 3. Colleges should establish the systems for getting students to participation in the internships or apprenticeships, regularly. 4. Linkage systems between colleges and enterprise should be required to monitor and to evaluate whole process related to students` internship programs. 5. Currently, career counselling and guidance of colleges significantly influence students labor market entry.
