The purpose of this study was to investigate the potentials on emoticons use in computer-mediated communication. The two methods in the present investigation were as follows: First, the limitations of CMC and the needs on emoticons` use in CMC were followed by related literatures. Second, the examples and the meanings for emoticons` use in CMC were followed by related literatures and researcher-made questionnaire. The results of this study were as follows: First, because a message was usually transmitted via written words or sentences in CMC, it was difficult to express nonverbal cues such as a face expression, body language, tone of voice, gesture, and glance. Therefore, instructors must perform a supplementary activity for assistance in developing an positive and supporting emotional atmosphere. For solving those difficulties, it was recommended to use unique symbols or techniques such as emoticons in CMC. Second, it was necessary to investigate the examples and the meanings on emotions as a preparatory step for correct and efficient emoticons` use in CMC. Instructors must examine learners` understanding in the emoticons` examples and the meanings on emoticons. Then, it was recommended to identify immediately available emoticons for their learners, meaning explanation necessary emoticons to their learners, and meaning consensus necessary emoticons by meeting with their learners
