향유와 열광 사이 - 현대 스포츠의 흡인력에 관한 철학적 탐구 -

Between Enjoyment and Fanaticism - A Philosophical Inquiry on the Pulling Power of Sport -

이 글에서 필자는 오늘날 스포츠를 매개로 광범한 대중을 사로잡은 애국주의적 정념의 위력을 철학적 비판의 법정에 회부해 보았다. 맨 먼저 필자는 스포츠 본연의 정신을 ‘경쟁적 유희’, 즉 ‘공정한 기예의 경연’으로 개념화함으로써 이것을 비판의 규범적 척도로 활용할 의도를 드러냈다. 이어서 필자는 한국인 특유의 식민지 콤플렉스와 여기에 편승해 득리해 온 기업들의 악순환적 공생 관계, 즉 필자가 ‘애국주의와 상업주의의 밀월’이라 이름한 현상에서 대다수 한국인이 ‘국가’의 ‘승리’에 목말라하는 이유를 찾아내고 이것을 몇 가지 예시를 통해 구체화해 보았다. 다음으로 필자는 그러한 애국적 열광에 휩싸인 현재의 스포츠를 스포츠 본연의 ‘경쟁적 유희’로 되돌리는 실천에서 지침이 될 만한 두 가지 규범적 원칙을 제안했는데, 이 중 하나는 ‘스포츠를 국위 선양이 아니라 선수 개개인의 자율적 자기실현과 결부하는 사회적 인식 전환이 필요하다’는 것이고, 다른 하나는 ‘선수들이 어떻게든 이겨야만 한다는 강박에서 벗어나 명실상부한 스포츠맨십을 배우고 떨치도록 고무되어야 한다’는 것이다.

In this essay, I brought the power of the currently worldwide prevailing sports-chauvinistic passion before the court of philosophical criticism. First, I defined the sport as a ‘competitive play’, or rather, a ‘fair skill competition’, and hereby revealed my intention of using that definition as a normative criterion of criticism. Second, I found the reason why the majority of Koreans have been so long thirsty after the victory of their fatherland in a shrewd symbiotic relation between the Korean old historical inferiority complex and the opportunistic businesses taking advantage of it, which I called the ‘honeymoon between chauvinism and commercialism’, and gave shape to this idea by means of a few exemplifications. Third, I proposed the two normative principles which can serve as the guidelines leading our practices restoring the current sports infected with such a fanatical chauvinism to the above-mentioned ‘competitive play’ proper to sport. One of them is that in our understanding of sport, it does not have to be related to the enhancement of national prestige any more, but to the individual players’s autonomous self-realization from now on. And the other is that the players should be encouraged to overcome their old obsession with the unfailing victory and display the sportsmanship worthy of the name to the full.
