How Parents of Elementary and Middle School Students Build Trust in Teachers?

연구목적: 이 연구의 목적은 초등학교와 중학교에 자녀를 보내는 학부모들이 교사와의 신뢰 관계를 어떻게 형성하는지 알아보는데 있다. 연구방법: 29명의 학부모를 21개월에 걸쳐서 면담하고 그 결과를 심층적으로 분석하고 해석하였다. 연구결과: 첫째, 교사에 대한 학부모의 신뢰는 학부모의 학창 시절의 경험, 성별, 연령, 학력, 학교 참여 활동, 학부모단체 활동, 사회계층 등에 영향을 받는다. 둘째, 학부모는 주로 자녀가 전하는 말이나 그들의 행동, 학습 자료를 통하여 교사를 판단한다. 셋째, 교사들이 학부모를 성가신 존재나 필요할 때 부르는 도우미로 생각하는 것은 신뢰 형성에 걸림돌이 된다. 넷째, 학부모는 학생을 존중하고 장점을 살리며, 생활지도와 학습지도에 성의가 있는 교사를 신뢰한다. 논의 및 결론: 교사에 대한 학부모의 신뢰를 높이기 위해서는 무엇보다 학부모와 교사가 직접 접촉하는 기회를 대폭 늘여야 하며, 교사들이 학부모를 학교 운영의 공동 주체로 생각할 수 있도록 교사연수를 강화할 필요가 있다.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate how parents of elementary and middle school students build trust in teachers. Method: 29 parents were interviewed over a 21-month period and the results were analyzed and interpreted in depth. Results: The final results of this study were as follows. Parents’ trust in teachers was constructed in a dynamic and complex context, including characteristics of parents, trustworthiness of teachers, the opportunities and quality of interaction between teachers and parents, and teachers’ perception of parents. Parents’ experience in school days, gender, educational background, participation in school activities, activities in parents’ organizations, and their social classes influenced the formation of trust. Parents tended to judge teachers by their children’s words, actions, and learning materials. It hindered parents’ trust in teachers that teachers treat parent as confounded nuisance or assistant. Parents trusted teachers who respect their students and cultivate their strengths, and who show commitment in guiding students. Conclusion: In order to increase parents’ trust in teachers, interaction between teachers and parents should be encouraged. Teacher training is crucial so that teachers can perceive the parents as one of agents of school management.
