이 글은 ‘온․오프라인 통합형 백과사전’구축 사례에 관한 연구로 국립민속박물관의『한국민속대백과사전』을 대상으로 하고 있다. 본 글에서는 최초 민속문화의 지식체계 구축을 목적으로 기획된 인쇄본 사전이 지식보급의 확대를 위해 온라인 사전으로 확장되고, 이후 정보 전달력 강화를 위한 보유 자료 분석과 이용자 분석을 통해 구축한 ‘온․오프라인 통합형 백과사전’에 대해 다루고 있다. 특히 데이터의 축적과 정보 기술의 발전에 따라 대중적인 서비스를 하기에 유리하며 여러 확장적 시도가 가능한 온라인 사전의 활성화와 이에 따른 정책적 변화에 대해 다루고 있다. 그 첫 번째 변화는, 사전 편찬 정책에 대한 것으로, 백과사전의 수록 콘텐츠의 수용 범위를 넓힌 것이다. 시대와 계층을 보다 확장하고, 해당 주제에 대해 빠지는 항목이 없는, 이른바 “있을 것은 다 있는 사전”으로 범위를 확장하였다는 것이다. 두 번째 변화는 온라인 부분에 대한 것으로, 이용자 증대와 해설을 뒷받침하는 데이터의 완성도를 높이기 위한 목적에 따라 웹 표준화 작업 등 검색 친화 환경을 구축하고 외부 기관 등과 연계하여 콘텐츠를 활용할 수 있도록 시스템을 구축한 것이다. 본 글에서는『한국민속대백과사전』을 대상으로 인쇄본 사전과 온라인 사전의 통합적 시너지를 위한 온․오프라인 통합형 백과사전 구축 사례를 연구하였다.
This paper presents a case study on the making of an integrated online-offline encyclopedia with the Encyclopedia of Korean Folk Culture. This study traced the process of ongoing development from the first dictionary planned and published in the offline format through online dictionaries to the policies of reinforcing communicability. A special focus was put on the activation of online dictionaries, which have an advantage for popular service and are open to various scalable attempts, according to the accumulation of data and the development of information technologies, as well as resulting policy changes. The first change involved the broadening scope of content acceptance in offline dictionaries. The scope was expanded to “dictionaries containing everything that people will need” to extend to more periods and classes and cover all the items of a given topic. The second change took place online. A search-friendly environment was built including web standardization along with a system to connect content with outside agencies and promote its uses. The present study offered a case of making an integrated online-offline encyclopedia for integrated synergy between offline and online dictionaries based on the Encyclopedia of Korean Folk Culture.
