19세기 프랑스 박물관에서의 동양 미술품 수용 역사 -앙리 체르누스키의 동아시아 여행과 파리 시립 아시아박물관의 설립 과정에 관한 고찰

The reception history of oriental art at the French museum in the 19th century -A study on Henri Cernuschi’s journey to East Asia and the establishment of the Asian Arts Museum of Paris

본 논문은 서로 다른 미학적 가치를 갖고 있는 문명들 간의 문화 교류와 미술 수용의 문제를 박물관이라는 체계를 통해 조망하는데 연구 목적을 두고 있다. 세부적인 측면에서 보자면 이 논문은 앙리 체르누스키의 동아시아 여행과 그의 주도로 설립된 파리 시립 아시아박물관의 형성 과정을 분석하고 이를 통해 19세기 후반 프랑스 사회에서 이루어진 동아시아 문명 및 미술에 대한 인식 변화를 고찰하는데 연구 의의를 두고 있다. 19세기 말 프랑스 사회는 동양에 대한 새로운 인식이 태동하던 시기였다. 동방 무역을 통해 프랑스 사회에 유입된 동아시아 유물들은 오랜 기간 동안 미지의 세계에 대한 이국적 취향과 문화적 호기심을 충족시키는 오브제로만 인식되어 왔다. 그러나 이러한 동아시아 예술에 대한 제한된 인식은 19세기 중후반 프랑스와 동아시아 국가들 간에 직접적인 교역 관계가 형성되면서 점차 변화하기 시작했다. 1871년 체르누스키의 동아시아 여행은 당대 프랑스 사회에서 형성된 동아시아 문명에 대한 새로운 문화적 취향과 학술적 관심을 기반으로 이루어졌다. 이 여행을 통해 그가 수집한 5천 여 점의 유물들은 파리 시립 아시아박물관의 건립을 견인하며 프랑스 사회에서 동아시아 문명에 대한 지식과 동양 미술의 미학적 가치가 확산되는데 있어서 매우 중요한 역할을 수행했다. 또한 체르누스키 파리 시립 아시아박물관은 프랑스 사회에서 동아시아 문화에 대한 이해를 확장하고 새로운 동양미술애호가들과 연구자들을 생성시키는 토대가 되었다는 점에서 동서미술교류사적 의미가 매우 큰 박물관이라 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of cultural exchange and art acceptance between civilizations with different aesthetic values ​​through a system called a museum. This paper analyzes Henri Cernuschi s travel to East Asia and the process of establishing of the Asian Arts Museum of Paris and it is intended to examine changes in the perception of East Asian civilization and art in French society in the late 19th century. At the end of the 19th century, French society was a time when a new awareness of Asian art was born. The artifacts of East Asia that had flowed into French society through Eastern trade have long been recognized as objects that satisfied exotic tastes and cultural curiosity about the unknown world. However, this limited awareness about asian arts began to change through exhibitions held in Paris in the mid-19th century. The Cernuschi Museum was established based on the cultural taste and academic interests in East Asian civilization formed in the mid-19th French society. The Cernuschi museum has been contributory to the introduction of Chinese and Japanese artifacts with archaeological value and works of aesthetic value to French society and providing academic knowledge about these artifacts. Through this, the understanding of asian culture in French society was spread, and new Asian art lovers and art historians were increased. Conclusionally, it can be appraised that the Cernuschi museum has a great significance in the history of East and West art exchange.
