The Effects of Flipped Learning on the Self-Esteem, Communication Competence, and Perceived Academic Achievement of Nursing Students: Single Group before and after Design

Purpose: This study attempted to examine the effects of learner-centered flipped learning on self-esteem, communication competence, and perceived academic achievement in nursing students. Methods: Data were collected from September to November, 2019. The participants of this study were students in second grade of nursing department and consisted 143. This study design was single-group before and after design. Nursing students complete a self-administered questionnaire before and after using a flipped learning education. Data were analyzed through the SPSS/WIN 21.0 program using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. Results: After completing the flipped learning method, participants showed statistically higher self-esteem (t=−9.12, p < .001), communication competence (t=−1.99, p =.049), perceived academic achievement (t=−9.54, p <.001) than before. Conclusion: This study found that the flipped learning method designed to learn tasks assigned by learners themselves was improve in the perceived academic performance of nursing students, and showed the results of improving learners self-esteem and communication competence in nursing students. The limitation of this study is that it is difficult to generalize as it is carried out through a single-group pre- and post-research design.
