지난 2019년 12월 이후로 시작된 것으로 알려진 COVID-19로 인해 지금 세계는 팬데믹이 선고된 가운데, 국가별로 “사회적 거리두기”와 자택대피 행정명령 등이 시행하는 등 온 세계가 이 전염병을 이겨내기 위해 노력하고 있다. 그런데 이러한 상황에서 지난 14세기부터 19세기에 이르기까지 유럽의 전역을 강타했던 흑사병이 최근에 다시 사람들의 입에서 회자되고 있다. 그 당시 루터가 한 목회자에게 답장으로 보냈던 편지는 오늘날의 전염병 시대를 경험하는 교회와 그리스도인들이 어떠한 사회적 책임의식을 가지고 하나님의 공적 교회로서의 바른 역할을 감당할 수 있을 것인지에 대해 분명한 대답을 주고 있다. 공적 책임의 수행자로서의 현대 교회는 첫째로, “죽은 자와 산 자 사이에” 서있다는 사회적 책임의 인식해야 할 것이다. 둘째로, “주의 손으로 나와 내 아버지의 집을 치소서”라는 마음으로 하는 사회적 역할의 실천이 필요하다. 마지막으로, 이제는 “수년 내에 주님의 일을 부흥시”키는 또 다른 사회적 확산의 시발점이 되어야 할 것이다.

In this situation, the Black Death, which hit all parts of Europe from the 14th to the 19th century, has recently been talked about again.
