A Teaching Case of Hands-on Activities on Cultural Arts Exchange : Lessons Learned from New Zealand Māori Visit to Korea

교수 사례는 학습 경험을 즐기는 적극적인 기회를 제공하고, 현장의 간접 체험을 유도하는 효과적인 교육물이다. 본 서술형 사례는 2018년 뉴질랜드와 한국의 문화 교류에 관한 두 저자의 섭외 활동을 소개함으로써, 국제 문화예술 분야의 유관 강의 시 사례 내 이슈를 토론하고 교훈을 숙고하는 데 목적이 있다. 2018년 5월 제7회 성주 국제생활문화 축제에 뉴질랜드 팀으로서, 국내에 생소한 마오리(Māori) 포이(Poi) 댄스 팀이 초청됐다. 당시, 한국의 지방 문화행사에 마오리 여성 공연단이 참여토록 양국 간 유관 조직을 조율하던 두 필자는, 오라키(Orakei) 마오리족 문화를 접했음에도 예상치 못한 부족 내 특수성에 난관이 많았다. 다행히 성공적인 공연으로 보람은 얻었으나, 마오리 부족 내 의사 결정의 절차, 지역 사회의 자금조달 과정, 마오리 공연물 구성에 관한 동 저자들의 초기 지식 부족은, 훗날 유사한 활동을 앞두고 여러모로 반추하는 계기였다. 이에, 우리에게 익숙지 않은 해외의 부족 문화를 대할 때 현장에서 접할 도전과 의미를 포함한 교훈을 논함은 의미 있는 배움이 될 것이다. 동 연구는 서술적인 사실 묘사를 위해 사례 전략, 구성 방법과 자료 수집 등 절차에 충실을 기했다. 따라서 한국 문화예술 분야의 실용적인 교수 자료로써, 사례 내 인물의 역할 연기나 그룹 토의에 널리 활용되기를 고대한다.

Teaching cases are practical educational materials, providing us with an opportunity to have an active learning experience and derive experiential payback. This teaching case in cross-cultural higher education aims to discuss the challenges and learn key lessons from a true story of the authors by introducing a real-life example of exchanging intangible culture. A Māori poi dance group in New Zealand was invited by Seongju-gun County for the 7th Seongju International Life Culture Festival 2018. In contrast to the fame of the haka as a Māori war dance, Māori women s poi performance is relatively less known to Korean. Our efforts in coordinating multiple organizations between two countries for the invitation of the Māori group to the Korean cultural event turned out to be rewarding and had a happy ending; however, the roles across the stakeholders were challenging in nature because of the process of decision-making and the issues of fundraising in the Māori community, in addition to our lack of practical knowledge about Māori s unique culture. By sharing our hands-on activities in a cultural exchange engagement, this teaching material can be used as an exemplary case along with the lessons learned from the Māori s visit to Korea, applying to a role-play and a group discussion across higher education students.
