Is Kohlberg’s Criticism of the Bag of Virtues Valid?

콜버그는 덕의 보따리, 그리고 그것의 실천을 통한 도덕교육을 비판한다. 그의 비판의 포인트는 크게 세 가지이다. 첫째로, 심리학자들이 실험을 통해 보여준 바와 같이, 덕의 보따리를 통해 기르려고 하는 인격 특성은 존재하지 않으며, 둘째로, 인격 특성이 존재하지 않으므로 그것을 기르려는 교육적 노력은 헛수고이며, 셋째로, 보편적 도덕원리로서의 정의를 추구하는 데 도움이 되지 않는다. 콜버그는 그 대안으로서 도덕성 발달의 3수준 6단계를 제시하고 있으며, 도덕교육에 대한 자신의 입장이 플라톤의 그것의 현대적 해석이라고 주장하고 있다. 그러나 콜버그의 이 주장은 두 가지 점에서 타당성을 결여하고 있다. 첫째로, 도덕성 발달의 3수준 6단계가 순차성, 불가역성 등을 특징으로 한다는 점을 감안할 때, 수준3에 도달하기 위해서는 수준1, 2를 거쳐야 한다. 피터즈의 표현을 빌면, 이성의 궁전에 도달하기 위해서는 습관의 마당을 거쳐야 한다. 둘째로, 콜버그의 견해와는 달리, 플라톤은 덕의 보따리, 또는 그의 용어로 덕의 떼가 교육의 과정에서 매우 중요한 역할을 한다고 주장하였다. 그가 보기에 덕의 떼를 통한 교육은 인간의 영혼이 욕망을 제어하면서 실재계로 눈을 돌리는 데 특별한 기여를 한다.

Kolberg criticizes the bag of virtues and moral education through its practice. There are three main points of his criticism. Firstly, as psychologists already shown through experiments, there is no character trait that they try to cultivate through the bag of virtues, secondly, since character traits do not exist, thereafter educational efforts to cultivate them are futile, and thirdly, it does not help in pursuing justice as a universal moral principle. As an alternative, Kohlberg proposes three levels and six stages of moral development, and argues that his position on moral education is that of Plato’s modern interpretation. But Kohlberg’s these arguments lack validity in two respects. Firstly, considering that the 3 levels and 6 stages of moral development are characterized by sequentiality and irreversibility, it is necessary to go through levels 1 and 2 to reach level 3. In R. S. Peter’s expression, in order to reach the palace of reason, we have to go through the courtyard of habit. Secondly, contrary to Kohlberg’s view, Plato argued that the bag of virtues, or in his terms, the swarm of virtues, was very important role in the process of education. In his view, education through swarm of virtues makes a special contribution to the human soul’s control of desires and turning to reality.
