Witnessing As A Form of Indirect Communication

키에르케고르 자신이 밝힌 바와 같이, 그의 저작 활동은 시종일관 ‘기독교인의 형성’을 위한 것이었다. ‘코르사르 사건’으로 인하여 가명저작술이 더 이상 그 목적에 기여하기 어렵게 된 상황에서 그는 저작술의 전환을 시도하였다. 라우리는 간접전달을 가명저작술에 한정되는 것으로 간주하는 관점에서 그 전환을 간접전달에서 직접전달로의 이행으로 규정하였다. 그러나 이러한 해석은 「기독교인의 형성」에 가명저작술로 예시되는 ‘2중반사’에 의한 전달 이외에 또 다른 유형의 간접전달, 즉 그리스도의 삶과 가르침으로 예시되는 ‘복제’에 의한 전달이 제시되어 있다는 점, 그리고 키에르케고르의 저작술의 제2국면이 후자로 규정될 가능성이 있다는 점을 충분히 고려한 것이 아니라는 문제를 안고 있다. 그 국면에서 키에르케고르가 ‘복제’에 의한 간접전달을 구사하며, 거기서의 간접전달의 특징은 ‘그리스도를 본받는 것’을 실천하는 데에 있다는 풀의 통찰은 간접전달의 의미를 더 깊은 차원에서 조명할 가능성을 열어준다. 간접전달은 기독교의 진리를 표현하고 전달하는 그리스도의 방법이며, 차라리 그 진리 자체이다. 키에르케고르의 저작술의 제2국면은 그리스도의 간접전달에 대한 증언으로 특징지을 수 있으며, 그것 또한 간접전달의 한 유형으로 해석될 수 있다.

As Kierkegaard himself stressed repeatedly, his life-long activity as an author was aimed at leading the readers to Christianity. When his pseudonymous authorship was made inoperable by the attack of the Corsair, he had to change over his older strategy of indirect communication exemplified by pseudonymity. Lowrie, as a most famous Kierkegaard scholar and translator, characterized the turn as the shift from indirect communication to direct communication. But his view on the second phase of Kierkegaard’s authorship needs to be reexamined, in that it overlooks the mode of ‘indirect communication by reduplication’, and there is a possibility that Kierkegaard used this mode of indirect communication in the second phase of his authorship. Poole tries to show that Kierkegaard executed that mode of indirect communication in order to embody the doctrine of Imitatio Christi. Poole’s insightful findings can throw light on the meaning of indirect communication in the deeper dimension. Indirect communication must be construed as the way to the truth suggested by Christ and rather the truth itself. The second phase of Kierkegaard’s authorship can be characterized as his own witnessing to the indirect communication of Christ, and interpreted as a form of indirect communication.
