루소의 「에밀」에 나타난 자연과 자연적 지식의 의미

Meanings of Nature and Natural Knowledge in Rousseau’s Emile

이 연구의 목적은 「에밀」에서 루소가 염두에 둔 ‘자연’과 ‘자연적 지식’의 의미를 밝히는 데에 있다. 연구자가 보기에 루소의 자연은 주체와 대상, 사고와 감각, 논리와 사실, 본질과 현상 등과 같은 이분법적 구분에 의거한 설명을 혼란에 빠뜨리는 파라독스적 성격의 단일한 전체에 의한 자기충족적 활동이다. 그것은 단일성, 활동성, 필연성을 가진 단순한 자기가 자발적이면서 자기규제적인 힘을 발현함으로써 체계적 전체로서의 단일한 자기를 실현하는 발달의 활동이다. 이 연구는 자연의 이러한 의미와 성격에 맞게 자연적 지식의 의미와 성격을 규정한 다음, 이 규정의 내용을 세부적으로 규명하기 위하여 다음 연구가설을 제시하고 그것의 성립 가능성을 확인하였다. 즉 루소의 자연교육론에서 자연의 의미와 성격에 따라 규정된 자연적 지식은 소크라테스가 말한 ‘자기지식’과 본질상 다르지 않으며, 그것은 명제적 지식이나 학문적 지식과 같은 ‘대상지식’의 배후에 감춰져 있는 것이다. 그리하여 자연적 지식은 ‘체계적 단일성, 자발적인 활동성, 자기반성적 발달 경향성을 가진 자기지식’으로 규정될 수 있으며, 「에밀」에서 자연교육의 과정은 이러한 자기지식의 발달 과정으로 해석할 가능성이 있다.

The purpose of this study is to look into the meaning of nature, and establish a hypothetical idea of the meaning of ‘knowledge according to nature’, so-called ‘natural knowledge’, in Rousseau’s Emile. In my view, his nature names generically the paradoxical but self-sufficient activities by an unitary whole about which all kinds of dichotomous distinction such as subject-object, thinking-sensing, and essence-phenomenon cannot but be fallen into confusion. In focusing on its overall educational process, human nature means developmental activities by undifferentiated simple self with three qualities of unity, activity, and necessity which tries to realize and perpetuate its own systemic unity by exercising its spontaneous and self-regulative power. According to this nature, this paper examines the plausibility of a following hypothesis in order to go into details of natural education: Rousseau’s natural knowledge is not essentially different from Socrates’ self-knowledge tacit to propositional knowledge and scientific knowledge regarded ordinarily as object-knowledge. In consequence, natural knowledge can be determined as self-knowledge with systemic unity, spontaneous activity, and self-reflective developmental disposition, and the process of natural education can be interpreted as a developmental process of such self-knowledge.
