중등학교 인문학 교육의 방향에 대한 성찰

An Examination on the Direction of Humanities Education in the Secondary School

2015 개정 교육과정은 중등학교에서 인문(학)적 소양을 기르는 일을 강조한다. 인문학이 ‘사람됨’이나 ‘인간성’을 가꾸는 일이라고 할 때, 인간을 기르는 교육에서 인문학 교육은 매우 중요하다. 그러나 중등학교에서의 인문학 교육이 어떤 성격을 가지는가는 불분명하다. 본 연구의 목적은 우리나라 중등학교에서의 바람직한 인문학 교육을 위하여 인문학 교육의 성격과 방향 설정에 대한 고려 사항들을 논의하는 것이다. 이를 위해서 첫째, 강단인문학과 실천인문학의 대립을 소개하면서 인문학의 특성 및 여러 접근방식을 살펴본다. 인문학의 특성은 삶에 대한 반성적 성찰, 즉 인문학적 방법에 있음을 지적한다. 둘째, 우리나라 중등학교에서의 인문학 교육의 문제점을 살펴본다. 그리고 인문학 교육의 여러 유형에 비추어 인문학 교육의 성격을 결정하는 데 고려할 사항들을 논의한다. 또한, 중등학교 인문학 교육을 강화하는 여러 가지 방안에 내재한 문제점들을 검토한다. 끝으로, 이러한 논의가 인문학 교육에 주는 시사점을 생각해본다.

Nowadays we observe humanities fever. In fact, 2015 National Curriculum emphasizes humanities education. However, it is not so clear what humanities education means. To emphasize humanities education without clarifying its meaning could cause confusion, distorting humanities education. Thus this paper examines the meaning of humanities education, exploring desirable directions of humanities education in the secondary school. First, I discuss the ironical situation in which humanities fever goes together with the crisis of humanities. Here we observe different meanings of humanities, namely, academic humanities and practical humanities. Then I point out a fundamental feature of humanities education, that is, the humanistic approach which emphasizes the critical reflection on human life. Thus, whatever we teach, we should teach them with humanistic methods. Next, I examine problems of humanities eduction in the secondary school. I discuss some possible ways to improve humanities education. In order to improve humanities education, we have to clarify its meaning. For this I provide some conceptual frameworks for different types of humanities education. We also need to improve the national curriculum guidebooks. We may improve humanities education by teaching various subject-matters and activities with the humanistic methods.
