Two Aspects of Socrates for Nietzsche

니체는 소크라테스주의를 이성이 모든 것을 가능하게 한다고 생각하는 낙천주의로 규정하면서 이는 환상이라고 비판하고 있다. 그런가하면 동시에 소크라테스를 니체 자신의 모델로 삼을 만큼 존경하였다. 이 글의 입장은 니체의 이성에 대한 비판은 이성을 제거하기 위한 것이 아니라 에로스와 분리된 이성을 문제 삼는 것으로 본다. 예술하는 소크라테스를 주장하는 니체 미학은 아폴론 없는 디오니소스가 아니라 아폴론을 디오니소스화 하는 것으로 설명한다. 만약 니체가 주장하는 것이 아폴론을 제거한 디오니소스라고 한다면 이는 야만적 디오니소스를 지칭하는 것으로, 이 세계에서 야만을 극복하려는 니체철학과 정면으로 대립한다. 이성과 열정은 상반되는 것으로 파악하는 것은 학문과 예술의 관련을 대립적으로 파악하는 것이다. 이성을 열정과 분리시켜 이성이 아닌 것으로 관심을 돌리고자 하는 것으로 해석하기보다는 그 이성을 열정이 담긴 것으로 살려내자는 주장을 하는 것으로 해석할 때, 비판과 존경을 동시에 담아내는 니체의 소크라테스는 정합적으로 이해될 수 있다. 따라서 니체가 비판하려고 한 소크라테스주의와 존경하고자 한 소크라테스는 따로 분리되는 것이 아니다. 결국 인간 소크라테스를 올바르게 존경하는 것은 소크라테스의 말을 무시하는 방향으로 나아가서는 불가능하다. 소크라테스를 말이 아닌 예술로 살려낸다는 의미를 말을 제거하고 다른 것으로 살려낼 수 있다고 해석하기보다는, 말의 의미를 자신의 열정으로 살려내려는 시도라고 해석할 때 소크라테스는 우리 모두에게 살아나서 그 위대함의 빛을 비추어줄 것이다.

Nietzsche’s criticism of Socraticism is rational optimism is a fantasy. Yet, he simultaneously respects Socrates as his role model. It is a fact that Nietzsche criticized rational optimism. However the reason why he criticizes rationality differs depending on the researcher’s perspective. This paper’s stance is that Nietzsche does not suggest abandoning rationality but regarding it as not separate from eros. The urging artisan Socrates does not mean Dionysian without Apollo but Dionysus with Apollo. It is against his philosophy which eager to overcome the barbarism in the world if Nietzsche emphasizes Dionysus without Apollo. Then, are rationality and eros conflict? It has the same meaning that scholar and art are conflicting if the previous question is right. However interpreting rationality as having eros can keep Socrates as a hero who is role model of Nietzsche. Because Nietzsche loved Socrates who is an eros incarnate. Therefore Socraticism which Nietzsche criticise cannot be separated from Socrates who Nietzsche respects. Finally, respecting Socrates cannot realized when ignoring his words. Socrates can show his greatness to us when we follow his words.
