Analysis of Democracy and Education: Pragmatism and Metapraxis

본 논문의 목적은 듀이의 「민주주의와 교육」에 나타나있는 ‘실용주의적 교육관’을 분석하여 그것을 ‘메타프락시스’와 비교하는 데에 있다. 듀이는 전통 철학의 이원론을 비판하고 ‘통합’과 ‘상호작용’을 강조하였다. 그가 이원론을 비판한 근거는 그것이 민주주의 사회의 핵심인 구성원들 간의 상호작용의 장애가 된다는 점, 그리고 아동이 자신이 하고 있는 활동에 ‘예견된 결과’를 가지기 어렵게 한다는 점에 있다. 이에 따라 듀이는 희랍의 자유교육이나 이론적 교과의 중요성을 천착하기보다 실제적 활동의 중요성을 강조하면서 ‘언어의 용도’보다는 ‘사물의 용도’에 치우친 통합론자가 된다. 듀이의 철학을 요약하는 ‘프래그마티즘’이 실천중심의 철학이라고 한다면, 듀이가 비판한 플라톤 또한 실천중심의 철학이라고 부를 수 있는 메타프락시스로 해석될 수 있다. 다만 이 두 경우의 실천은 의미가 상이하며 전자를 ‘양상으로서의 실천’이라고 부른다면, 후자는 ‘총체로서의 실천’이라고 부를 수 있다. 메타프락시스에 의하면 교육은 여러 양상들을 실천으로 보고 그 양상에 반영되어 있는 총체를 확립하는 행위이다. 듀이가 언어의 교육적 용도를 간과한 것은 프래그마티즘에서의 실천에, 그것이 유목적적 활동이라는 하나의 양상임에도 불구하고, 총체와의 관련이 반영되어 있지 않다는 점의 필연적 귀결이다.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze pragmatist education in Dewey s Democracy and Education. Dewey overcame the Dualism of traditional philosophy and expressed a philosophy centering on integration and transaction . The reason for criticism of dualism is that it is a barrier to transaction among the members of the society, and it is difficult for the child to have a end in view in his/her activities. Rather than emphasizing the importance of liberal education and theological subject, Dewey emphasizes the importance of practical activities, leading to biased integration that places a greater emphasis on the use of things than the use of language. While Pragmatism that summarizes Dewey s philosophy is a practice-oriented philosophy, Plato can be interpreted as Metapraxis, which can be called philosophy of practice. However, the practice of these two cases is different in meaning; the former is called practice as a mode , the latter can be called practice as a totality . According to Metapraxis, education is the practice of establishing the mind(soul) as a totality by practice as a totality. Metapraxis emphasizes that the core of education is in cultivating the mind by succeeding and developing Socrates counsel to caring for the soul.
