An Essay on the Meaning of ‘Doing Moral’

본 연구에서는 2015 개정 도덕과 교육과정에서 새롭게 제시된 용어인 ‘도덕함’의 개념이 아직 학계의 논의를 충분히 거치지 않았다는 점을 인식하고, 도덕함이라는 개념의 성립 가능성 및 그 의미에 관한 하나의 견해를 제시하고자 하였다. 논의에 따르면, 도덕함은 도덕이라는 개념의 난해함으로 인해 그 의미를 파악하기가 어려운 것일 뿐 성립이 불가능한 것은 아니다. 도덕을 한다는 용어를 처음 접할 때에는 우선 생활 속에서 도덕적 행위를 습관적으로 실천하는 모습을 떠올리게 된다. 이것은 실천적 도덕함의 1차적 의미로서 도덕함의 기본이 되지만 도덕함의 전부는 아니다. 도덕적 행위의 전통 혹은 습관을 도덕적 관점에서 이해하고 그에 비추어 자신을 성찰하는 이론적 도덕함과 그러한 도덕적 이해가 이루어질 수 있도록 별도의 장을 마련하여 의도적인 대화를 나누는, 실천적 도덕함의 2차적 의미까지 모두 포괄했을 때에 도덕함의 개념이 온전히 성립된다고 말할 수 있다. 이에 비추어 보았을 때, 도덕과는 도덕함을 위해 별도로 마련된 시공간에서 도덕함에 관한 이전의 이해 및 실천을 재료로 삼아 도덕적 대화를 통해 이를 새롭게 이해함으로써 다시 실천에 옮기도록 한다는 점에서 도덕함을 적극적으로 실천하는 교과로 규정된다.

‘Doing moral’ is newly presented as the core concept that defines a characteristic of moral education as a subject in the 2015 revising national curriculums. The purpose of this essay is to suggest a view for the meaning of ‘doing moral’. According to this essay, a basic and common meaning of ‘doing moral’ is following habitually traditional and customary moral behaviors. But appearances of tradition and custom has changed in process of time, and there has been the risk that their meaning and value has distorted by factors including extreme rationalism. In this regard, it is another meaning of ‘doing moral’ to comprehend the essential meaning and value in tradition and custom as expression of morality. Importantly, this task is able to be performed not in daily life but in especial time and place for it. It is the last meaning of ‘doing moral’ to provide the time and place and to make a teacher and students discourse on moral comprehension by intend. Moral education as a subject is connected with these meanings all and performs ‘doing moral’ actively for realizing these meanings.
