교육목적으로서의 여가

Leisure as the Purpose of Education

희랍어 스콜레(schole)에서 유래된 ‘여가’는 자유인을 기르는 학교교육을 의미하는 개념이다. 학교교육의 근본적 성격을 나타내는 여가의 의미로부터 우리는 교육의 목적이 무엇인가를 도출해낼 수 있다. 현대인들은 교육은 사람들로 하여금 사회생활에 필요한 직업을 갖도록 해주고, 그 직업적 성취를 통하여 자아실현을 하도록 돕는 데 그 목적이 있다고 생각한다. 그러나 교육의 목적이 여가에 있다는 주장은 이와는 다른 방식으로 교육의 목적을 설명한다. 교육이 지향해야 할 목적은 사람들로 하여금 일에 매몰되어 일상의 문제해결이 전부라고 생각하는, 경험적 자아에 국한된 삶은 가치 있는 것이 아님을 깨닫도록 하는 것이다. 여가를 목적으로 삼는 교육은 사람들로 하여금 비록 일의 세계에서 살아가지만 지식을 통하여 보다 가치 있는 삶, 늘 자신의 마음을 성찰하고 형이상학적 자아를 지향하는 삶을 살도록 하는 것을 의미한다.

The concept of leisure, originated from schole, means school education for cultivating liberal man. From the concept of leisure, we can understand the real purpose of education. Today, many people think that education serves man to search for his suitable job. So they insist that the purpose of education is self-realization through professional success. But according to the perspective of leisure as the purpose of education, we can define the real purpose of education. We have to modify the thought that man lives for the sole object of earning fame and of aiming for achievement. Although man has to work for a living, he has to live for finding ideal self. In doing so, we can search our mind and reach forward to an metaphysical self.
